  • Where do I start - need to service/maintain Gaggia Classic

    Hi,

I recently discovered that a friend has a Gaggia Classic + Gaggia grinder that has had little or no service at all! And I mean no descaler, no cleaner- nothing. They didnt even know to flush water through the brew head after making a shot.

The machine hasnt been serviced in two years, and the grinder hasnt been cleaned or serviced its entire life - 7 years!

Where do I start? I doubt theyll send it to be serviced anytime soon, so I thought Id lend them a hand.

Ive unscrewed the showerscreen and cleaned that - ick. And did a mini backflush. Now what? Any suggestions?

Im assuming the burrs on the grinder would need replacing - they do have about 2-4 coffees a day - estimated 100kg through the grinder. Grind looks okay to me but what signs should I look for that would suggest it needs new burrs?

They say one can expect 400 kg from set of burrs
They also say to run ones fingernail on a sharp edge on the burr to check sharpness
see if it makes a mark and your nail

I would pull the burr carrier apart give it a brush & vacuum and a general wipe and clean
