  • Im going for it... EM6910 here I come

    Hi all,

I posted (http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1233703765/new and http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1233786997/new) almost a year ago about getting some form of manual brewer (like the presso) and the em480 grinder...

Well here I am, after reading and reading CS for the last 48 hours (and seeing one in store for $590) Ive decided to take the plunge and go for the EM6910 (It helps that the missus is in on it this time :P)

Probably gonna hit up the store on Friday,  so I just wanted any last minute tips, warnings, suggestions or any other input about the EM6910 and potentially the EM480 (they have one in store for $180) or suggestions for a different grinder :P
    Thanks everyone!!!

(p.s. Ive missed my daily CS reading, gonna have to start up again  ;D )

    suggestions for a different grinder
That would depend on whether you are willing to spend a lot more money on a grinder.
Remember, the 0450/0480 is the minimum level grinder recommended here.

The 0450/0480 is noisy and messy and known to have QC issues these days (might need a washer or two).

Make sure you read AngerManagements posts about the 6910; he knows more about them than even I do.

Specifically the "5c test" and the "sweet spot".

If you look after it the 6910 can make you very good coffee and not need to go in for user induced repairs.
If you get the 0480 make sure it comes with the spout extension (new stock) as that will cut down some of the mess.

      Hi Turbo,

You might want to get the extended warranty for your piece of mind. I think it costs $100 and covers you over 4 years. (plus one year manufacturer warranty).

Get the warranty or dont get the machine. I have heard so many stories of peoples 6910 dying just after the 12 months. Mine included. It has never worked properly since...

I think thats all Im prepared to spend at the moment, and I honestly (at this point in time) dont mind the noise/mess of lower end grinders (got some family reject atm, cant be worth more than $50 :P).

Ive found what I thought were relatively vague posts about the sunbeam sweet spot and mentions of a 5c test, but I cant find details re the 5c test or where on the gauge the sweet spot is... although that could be because at this point Im not entirely familiar with the machine :P Im assuming all will become more clear when I get it...?

Yeah, Im getting quite fond of the idea of taking one home (oogling reviews, comparisons etc online :P) so Ill be pretty picky on the cleaning/care of it Will definitely make sure to get the extension for the em0480!

Im pretty keen to get into it... probably going to head in sooner, cant help myself ;D

Ill keep in touch, specially after the first coupla runs and see what else I need, although from the searching I have been doing today Id suggest most of the info is there, I just need to look harder :P Forgive any PMs that may come your way re 6910

Re: Im going for it... EM6910 here I come

            Forget the extension
Just get used to measuring the correct amount of beans into the hopper and grind into a can (or a spare milk jug as I do)
Makes zero mess and reduces clumping
5 cent piece test: Grind, dose, tamp, place 5c on top of puck, lock into place, unlock and inspect, 5c should be slightly impressed into to puck, get used to how high your tamper sits inside your tamped basket to achieve this, this is a good starting point.

No problems so far (fingers crossed)
except for wife not cleaning/flushing as I would like after use.... but she is learning slowly

My grinder came with 3 washers already installed and my grind is about 13-15 on the scale now. When new was about 18 but bedded in fairly quickly to 13-15, depending on bean and conditions

I could see the benefit of a better grinder, but this one isnt too bad. It makes a coffee most of my and my wifes friends rave about.
Although I thinks a lot of this could be due to home roasting and not using supermarket crap

What makes you say that shawty?

I bought a 0450 to use with the 6910 at work.
It WAS messy and noisy and I replaced it after a while with a Gaggia MDF.
However, I did obtain the extension spout as soon as it was available, as well as some spare washers even though mine didnt need any.
I found the spout helped a little with the mess as it directed the grinds better into the basket.

                    +1

That little spout greatly reduces the amount of mess.

Well... if you read the rest of the reply you would see I say to grind into a can/jug which results in ZERO mess and reduced clumping.

I guess the extra metal reduced static somehow.

I used the extension and still found it to be too messy for me

This solution killed 2 birds with one stone for me [smiley=wink.gif]

I would definately ask for the extension, because if you really like grinding directly into the basket, then it reduces the mess compared to not using it.

Fair enough. I used to use the supplied plastic container but once I got a hold of the spout found that a lot more convenient.
