  • Sylvia Steam Thermostat problem.

I have a pided Silvia. When I turn the steam function on the temperature reading on the pid keeps on going up. I turn the steam off at about 145 deg, but if I didnt, it would just keep going. I think I have seen it up to 180.

Having just stripped the machine to galvanize the chassis and rebuilt it, I have learned something about the inner workings. Logic suggests that the problem is the steam thermostat. The thermostat is clearly easily replaced.

My question is: Do thermostats expire?

    In a word.... Yes!

Like any electro-mechanical device, they will wear out.

Since you have a PID Controller installed, why not use that instead? It will do a much better job than any thermostat and will hold Steam Volume at the optimum level throughout any milk texturing exercise.

Should give that some thought mate....

      Thanks Mal.

Looks like I am going to have to familiarize myself with the PID installation guide to figure it out. But with a bit of head-scratching it has to be do-able.

Its easier than you probably realise....

All thats required is to adjust the Setpoint up to a nominal Steam Setting - 125C is excellent - and then adjust it back to the Brew Setting when youre finished. Im sure youll be quietly amazed at the difference in steam performance
