Re: EM0480 Grinder AND [Replace OR Repair Sunbeam EM6910]

Ok... here is the status of events.

First of all, I grinded the bevels to have a less steep an incline and be gentler on the Shower Head Collar which is obviously damaged as per previous posts.   See pics 1,2,3,4 for before and after on both sides.

Re: EM0480 Grinder AND [Replace OR Repair Sunbeam EM6910]

Then after trying various types and thickness of spacers made from leather, plastic, a pool noodle, Toilet seal, rubber o-ring I found that the Shower head must be too far gone.

The best performer was the o-ring which fit perfectly in the filter.  Its round shape allowed it to sit in the overhang nicely.  It was too thick initially at over 3mm (considering the SB one is 1mm), and therefore I could not engage the group head past 7pm which made it turn toward open with the pressure.

I cut the first one in half with a stanley knife and this was horrendously looking like 4wd terrain when I was finished.

Then I used the metal toothed cutter on the rotary saw whilst anchoring the o-ring in the filters overhang.  The result was two pieces flat on one side and round on the other.  One was ~1.5mm thick and the other 2.15mm.

These both allowed me to turn full around to 4 and 5pm respectively.  They both leaked through the group head but remained in place this time.  The 2.15mm could be pushed a little further to stop most of the leaking but this would mean the same result in days to come.

So to conclude, would a couple original SB spacers make the difference because the surface remains uneven OR is the Shower Head definately shot.

note: I have not used a round tube to bang the left side in as per AMs last comment.

I guess I am off to Michels Pattiserie in the morning.

      Regards, Nick

        NNOOOOOoooooooo

The spacer is for the group... Nothing to do with the basket.. Or the group Handel...

1: Remove the shower screen and then remove the BLUE seal - see ya pic below..  Check it for splits etc...  The spacer fits between the group head and this blue seal..

        Pm me ya ph number

        PS... The Lugs look good

            No problem..

Ya all good and with a spacer and the tapered lugs... No need for a new collar.

If it gets a bit lumpy... Just panel beat it and you should get an extra 3 - 6 months and have $$$ saved for a new machine... AND grinder.

                  She is Back!!!

Not a leak in site. Changed to a finer grind, packed it less and tampered a little gentler - got a great result on the pressure as I like it.

As mentioned last night, the group handle started out of the box at 5pm and it has taken 3 yrs to reach 4pm with nowhere to go.   I now have it at 6-6:30pm with the makeshift 2.15mm spacer.   Will order 2xSB spacers (1mm each) next week and should be just sweet at 6 oclock.

Here a pic of this mornings result.

                    Nick

It was a pleasure to chat, cover off on any number minor issues with your machine; and to hear your back in action.

I see your hitting the sweet spot that the empty preasurirsd basket gave. Dont forget to get a washer for the em0480 and a new seal for th 6910.

Oh... I am sure ya wife thinks we are mad and I had to beg to be let back inside..

                    Regards AM

A week after repairs and they just keep brewing...

Sunbeam have sent me the OEM spacers although yet to install. I am hesitant to be honest coz right now the machine is perfect. If it is not broke why fix it - right? :-/

                      Regards, Nick

Re: EM0480 Grinder AND [Replace OR Repair Sunbeam EM6910]

its good to see people working through problems with their 6900-6910, as i too am a 6900 lucky man with no problems to date (touch wood) albeit a sticking steam micro switch. I think these machines are much like cars, if they are serviced regually and kept in a clean fashion then they will last. Unless your unlucky to grab a lemon and then nothing will help you.

But i am glad AM is here to help with these solutions because ive just had mine apart having alook at my collar and finding that it still looks ok, maybe a spacer in a few months to keep everything on the right road.

I firmaly belive if it wasnt for some expirienced people who give their knowledge freely there would be many a reader out there who would have chucked their machine instead of having a go and fixing it.

                            Rock on 6900s

Just wanted to say a big thank you to all of the contributors to this thread, you just saved my life, well at least my sanity. I have just fashioned a spacer from the old seal that was just replaced and my EM6910 is back on form at 6 o'clock (it's been a while since that has happened). Should keep me going until the replacement collar arrives from Australia (currently living in the UK, hence the need to brew a decent cup of coffee myself). Cheers!
