  • EM6910 Worn Collar Pics

Thought Id share some pics of my 6910s worn collar after I changed it myself over the weekend.

This is after 20 months of use. Only started leaking badly over the last couple of weeks though. After a seal change, descale & some experimentation with dosing, the collar was the likely culprit.

    Enjoy.

That much wear in only 20 months! was that average home use, or did you flog it hard?

Well ya level... Most tend to damage one side much harder than the other..

As per the dozen or so I have seen and worked on etc.. I would have to say OD...  Sorry... Ignore all the 3mm / 5 mm etc etc every machine is different to some extent... Then I have also seen people put in spacers ahead of time... Opps... Tight at almost 7.00  I guess I will have to tug harder..

The last user had biceps that made scollops ( Those at the meet will know) look like that weakling in the old  "Kick sand in face" adds from the fifties.

5 cent piece... And get to know the feel... Close ya eyes... Use ya sensors and not NUMBERS...

If ya feel it tighten up; then coffee is being forced onto the shower screen..

A correct dose should be the same as using an empty basket..  Try it , feel it... Empty is the norm..

Put and tamp coffee... If ya go to lock in and ya have to give an extra tug... Then your just tamped the coffee with the shower screen - Up dosing a bit... If ya have to think / pause or feel the biceps flex a bit = OVERDOSING..

End of seagull swoop and dive.

Those that got a look at a couple of teh collars at the meet yesterday; will be able to verify...

whats this 3mm / 5mm you talk about? And spacers? where? 7.00 what? I have no idea what youre on about, but wanting to know

Its not supposed to touch the screen at all right? Or is a light touch ok?

Dosing level as to the diff between the lip of the basket and the top of the coffee in the basket..

                  - People think coffee is by numbers and some where it will be stated (manuals even)  tamp to a depth of  Xmm and 15kg.

                  - When groups start to stretch etc and or group seals are no longer available at a certain thickness... You can get spacers..  Sunbeam and most others commercial Manufacturers have them available... US poor people make our own.. Bit of cardboard.

                  - Spaces between the Group head and the group seal    Some people check an old system out and go... Look the group still locks at 6:00 ( Handle point straight at you)..  The collar / group head could be almost buggered but the put in over sized group seals and or spacers...  Thus it locks and look OK..     Things are not always as they appear.

                  - If it locks in and tight usually at 6:00 or towards 5:00 ( think of looking down on a clock face) and that is the norm... Get to know the feel..

Ya dose and go to lock in and it is TIGHT at 7:00 then that say what ?  Yep ya got way too much coffee in the basket. Sure you can force it to 6:00... But ya have just used the shower screen to tamp even harder and given no space for the coffee to expand.. OPPS  =  CHOKE   If no choke  = too course a grind or stale beans..

You have to manage the variables...  The machine has no control over the process, it is up to you.

Lots of discussion... 5 cent piece test is a good place to start... It is not the be all and end all of dosing...

Check what in ya cup... If it is good..  Then that is what counts..

Just remember... If your ODing and having to lock it in with force to get that shot... That is not good for the machine and you need to reconsider what else might be at play...

PS... Mate had a couple of people drop in to his place in Brisbane; looking for a job.  They had papers and had completed a 4 hr training session and now call themselves baristas.

As  Chris (talk coffee ) i think said / implied the other day... Been at it for years and still not a Barista.....  I will never be a Barista... Might understand a bit and fix a thing ore two, roast some as well... But not a Barista...

It is a balancing act... Grind size / dose level and tamp...

A good shot can be had on any system.. A great shot is only ever provided by the person pulling the shot and a Barista will do it every time  8-)

What about a sixpence.. Has the correct silver content.. Thus more food safe than a 5 cent piece ;D

Dont apologize. Im certain you are right re: the over dosing. I have since changed my dosing technique & locking in force to increase the life of this collar. I think I was too heavy handed locking in before - always trying to lock in at >6 oclock, when 6:30 was probably sufficient.

I gather from this that most machines have a continuous thread for the group?

The Breville has a "stop" at about 5:00, so no matter how strong you feel, youre going to lock at the same spot (kind of a like a quarter turn tap). I guess that overcomes some of the over-tightening, but doesnt give any room for extra-tightening when the seals start to go.

                            Hi fellow snobs.

I found this topic interesting... I am about to start looking for a reputable Sunbeam repair centre for my 6910. Note I have had theis machine for 2.5 years and not a single glitch til llast month...

Similar to the discussion here, i have come to the conclusion that my 6910 needs a new collar - having replaced a seal, it is still leaking from where the basket meets the collar. So my questions to any of you who have gone through this are:
                            1. Where do I buy a new collar from?
                            2. Are there any instructions/assembly diagrams available to follow? An initial attempt to disassemble the 6910 failed...
                            3. Any of you here ahd a good experience with a (passionate) repair centre in Melbourne (if all else fails...)

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Would love to help you... But have had no first hand experience with others out side of QLD.

1: Get a spacer from sunbeam or make one

2: Mod ya group lugs and you will be ok for about another 12 months at least.

                              Repair..

1: Aprox $65 for teh collar

2: Labour and other costs... Highly variable..
