  • Silvia Light Stuck On

    Hi everyone,

This morning I woke up to my Silvia with the orange light on, I thought it was warming so went about making my breakfast but it was still on 10 minutes later. I instantly thought somehow the thermostat may have been triggered but wasnt sure why because the machine hadnt been left empty or the steamer hadnt accidentally been left on. After checking the thermostat, this was fine. I turned the machine back on after checking the thermostat and left it for a bit and still the orange light is on yet if I run some water through, it feels quite hot/normal.

Does anyone have any ideas what may be wrong?

If anyone has any suggestions Id greatly appreciate it

    - Alex

Hmmm. Are you saying the neon was lit when the switch was off when you woke up?

This link still works: http://home.surewest.net/frcn/Coffee/Silvia/SilviaWorks.html and has the wiring diagram for a Silvia. If you follow it, you can diagnose where the current is flowing. If that makes no sense to you DO NOT poke around with a multimeter. It is 100% 240VAC inside a Silvia.

Just to point to one possibility - my Silvia came with a super dodgey main switch. I had the experience of the neon being on whenever the main switch was on.

Cheers Kevin for the reply. I think this one might be above my pay grade by the sounds of it and will require someone who knows what theyre doing to have a look at it. Has anyone suggestions of where to get a silvia fixed?

Ahh it was a long day without coffee  :-?

        Hi Mal,

Ive owned the machine for around 18 months with no mods performed and unfortunately out of warranty.

        Cheers guys,

Sending Silvia to Oomph or any other reputable specialist espresso machine technician would definitely be the go. Too dangerous to be mucking around under the bonnet if youre not au fait or qualified to work with 240V AC....

              Re: Silvia Light Stuck On

Boiler is warming up, but light is staying on anyway, right?

Then my guess would be either a dodgy main switch (less likely), or a failing heating coil (more likely).

The light gives an indication of the state of the thermostats.  If the light is on, then the thermostats are calling for more heat.  If the light stays on, then the boiler is never getting hot enough to satisfy the them.

If the problem was caused by a stuck thermostat, then the heater would continue to heat until the safety thermostat was tripped, which has apparently not happened on your machine.

So that leaves a faulty heater as the most likely cause.  OOMPH! will probably be able to tell right away if this is the case.

              Jim  (hopes hes wrong)

                  Re: Silvia Light Stuck On

Theoretical "on paper" diagnosis from all the above, Im with Jim, its the element. Actual diagnosis could point the finger elsewhere but....

You say the water seems quite hot / normal.....maybe not.....lukewarm perhaps?

Further, in agreement with others, whatever the cause there is an electrical "inconvenience" happening and this means it is a "take it to your nearest service centre" scenario. I am glad others have already recommended that.

Dont forget to tell us what is actually wrong, when you get it back.

Hope it isnt the heating element - that means a whole new boiler on the new Silvias...

I take it you have an RCD/ELCB/"Safety Switch" on your mains supply to the machine? If not, you might like to know that partial failure of the heater can lead to the chassis getting shorted to the neutral side of the mains and the little neon will light permanently under that circumstance. Unfortunately, so might you if you touch the machine!

                            Best of luck with it!

                            /Kevin

Thanks to the guys at The Cupping Room my machine was looked at and it turns out it will be needing a new boiler which will run me around $350-400~. Might be best to buy a new one I think

                              Thanks again everyone
