  • 2009 Rancilio Silvia - backflushing? yes? not? how to step by step?

hello, apologies if this has been covered elsewhere (a pointer please?)
I have a 2009 (latest model) Silvia. Do I need to backflush it? how often? and if so please provide step by step instructions, I would hate to destroy the new $800+ machine! 8^)

    thank you in advance

This should have been covered from the place you purchased it from

    In general
If an espresso machine has a 3 way valve you can back flush by using the blind filter
    1] water only daily
2] with chemical after 1 kg of beans

      Fully agree..

Tis a shame people buy and then have to go to a public forum to find out the basics..

      Do some reading here.. http://home.surewest.net/frcn/Coffee/Coffee.html

All good stuff and plenty of Silvia information..

Shame teh supplier did not point you in that direction.

Re: 2009 Rancilio Silvia - backflushing? yes? not? how to step by step?

        Hi Acid Rider,

Ive also got a Silvia (08 model), which I bought second hand from a CS member who also gave me operating and maintenance instructions for the silvia from a reliable CS sponsor.

Have just re-read the Silvia instruction booklet which as youve probably noticed does not mention anything about backflushing the machine at all.  The notes I have from the site sponsor state that [u]chemical[u] backflushing should not be performed while it is under warranty (12 months) as this may void your warranty (nothing is mentioned in the silvia instruction manual about this however).

However as KK mentioned backflushing with water only should be done daily, presuming you have used the machine daily, and with chemical fortnightly or after ~1kg of coffee (if you choose to wait for 12 months).

The site sponsor explains how to backflush as:

: Insert blind filter into handle and lock into place in group head
: Press coffee button and let it run for five seconds, remove handle and empty dirty water
: Repeat above process five times
: Replace normal filter into handle and empty your driptray

When you choose to do a chemical backflush (using something like clean machine)
: Place teaspoon full  of backflush powder in blind filter and lock into group head
: Press coffee button and let run for five seconds (dont remove and empty handle after each backflush)
        : Repeat five times
: Remove handle and clean any leftover powder from blind filter
: Backflush using water as previously explained five times

You may want to discard your first shot after this chemical process to ensure no chemical taste in your shot.

        Hope you find this helpful.

        Paul

The Silvia has a 3 way valve and is designed to be backflushed.

Backflush it regularly- regardless of what the seller says :

            A year without cleaning?
            Sounds a bit extreme.

Just a quick suggested addition to Pauls instructions:

"When you choose to do a chemical backflush (using something like clean machine)
: Place teaspoon full  of backflush powder in blind filter and lock into group head
: Press coffee button and let run for five seconds (dont remove and empty handle after each backflush)
              Addition:
Then let the flushing chemical sit in the machine for say 15 seconds before you repeat

              : Repeat five times
: Remove handle and clean any leftover powder from blind filter
: Backflush using water as previously explained five times"

Explanation this gives the detergent time to melt the old coffee sludge before it is flushed away.  I have done this and the wait certainly adds a lot of residue.  I may be in error - if so I am happy  to be corrected.

Much too much for a domestic machine dumiya. I suggest more like 1/3 teaspoon...

thanks everyone. will check it out. yes, i read the instructions and this is what confused me. the shop did give me the blind filter and even some power for backflushing but given i was confused in printed instructions verus what the shop said - i decided to ask here.....
now i have more details i can move on....

the warranty on 2009 silvia, i believe, is now 2 years, i dont really want to risk it.
