  • Time for a machine upgrade - from Sunbeam to Silvia?

Have been using a manual Sunbeam EM3800 for a couple of years now and its on its last legs.

Was thinking about sticking with Sunbeam and going for the 6910 but the more I read it sounds like a Silvia might be the way to go. My EM3800 is entirely manual and I like that so from what I can tell the Silvia wouldnt be that different apart from the priming bit? Whats the deal with the priming?

I think youll be happy if you went with the Silvia instead of Sunbeam just because of the boiler rather then the thermoblock (especially if you like milk based drinks).
Have you got a grinder? No grinder = no Silvia.

Personally, Id be recommending one of these before a Silvia.... http://www.jetblackespresso.com.au/s...lelit-pl041em/ Much better bang for buck and internally theres not much difference. I used to own a similar machine for several years and it consistently produced excellent coffee. If you dont already own a decent grinder, then the Lelit Combo machine may be a better option and quite a few of our Site Sponsors sell them.... 8-)

          Me too.....

We dropped Silvia from our range after the major Melbourne importer jacked up wholesale price substantially and then retailed them at wholesale + 20 bucks...

To me, it means that a Silvia should be retailing at more like $700-750...I smell rats >

All things being equal the Lelit looks to be every bit as good as the Silvia, Alan Frew certainly seems to think so.
The one point that would stop me dead is the 57mm PF group head, it closes so many options, what were they thinking? otherwise it looks pretty good.

No really, I think you should list them. Not a good idea to make a statement like that without backing it up. It has a strong potential to influence perceptions.

Heres a little list of why I dont have an issue with 57mm:

                  1) There are several commercial machines with other than 58mm sizes and they dont have a problem.

                  2) Good quality 57mm tampers are readily available. Even Espro have one.

                  3) And of course you can have one custom made, as do many people who have a 58mm basket.

                  Over to you!

                    And...

The Baskets that ship with the Lelit et al are a damn sight better than those that ship with the Silvia and a few other machines....

If thats a request for me to provide a list, then:
                        San Marco - 53mm
                        La Spaziale - 53mm
                        Pasquini - 57mm
                        Reneka - 56mm
                        Dalla Corte - 54mm
                        Cimbali - 57mm
                        Unic - 56mm
                        Aurora - 56mm

                        Enough?

Now, Im still interested to hear Jon support his earlier remark. :

                          Yes; thanks.
Makes it easier for me to weigh up both sides of the discussion (when we get the other side   ).

Would not be difficult, the first thing I replaced on my Silvia was the basket.

                              Hi Guys
Sorry for posting then disappearing! Thought the site would email when I got a reply but it didnt...

Grinder - I have a Sunbeam EM0480 conical burr which should do the job for now???

Not too fussed re: the PF size - I dont expect Ill be making any changes from what arrives in the box.

With the boiler models Im worried about warm up time as I dont usually have 20-30 minutes to spare before work! I see some people put their boiler machines on timers but others dont recommend it? How can you do this anyway if you need to prime the machine when it is turned on or is it OK so long as you leave the boiler full each time you switch off?

                              Any comments?

                              Thanks for the advice guys.
