All things being equal the Lelit looks to be every bit as good as the Silvia, Alan Frew certainly seems to think so.
The one point that would stop me dead is the 57mm PF group head, it closes so many options, what were they thinking? otherwise it looks pretty good.
I am looking at the Lelit to use in the office at work. There are many good reviews around of this machine.
Why do you see the 57mm PF group head as a problem? Pardon my ignorance but this is the first time I have come across the opinion that PF group head size needs to be considered.
Are you able to shed some light on this?
    Thanks in advance.
    Stan.

It would seem Jon has selective vision.

Seems people are getting a little sidetracked... any chance we could go back to my queries re: warming time??

Very similar to a Silvia I would imagine (Ive never owned or played with a Silvia but am very familiar with its design) and maybe, even a little quicker. All in all though, I wouldnt work on anything less than 45 minutes to make sure everything is up to temperature....

                Thanks Mal
Wow - 40 minutes is a long time! How long to produce an average result that will satisfy a morning pre-work caffeine requirement? Great coffee can be a weekend job... The Lelit site says 3 minutes to heat up - surely there is a happy medium between the two...

Unless I use a timer which sounds like a dangerous proposition...

Lies, lies, lies....All machines need at least 30 minutes....Do a search on the term cheat Silvia for some tips

                    Why dangerous?

The only problem Ive had with my timer was recently discovering the back up batteries were dead.
This meant that after the electrician had been to install a new light that the internal clock had reset to midnight and the machine didnt come on as usual the next morning.

Re: Time for a machine upgrade - from Sunbeam to Silvia?

Ok so I havent had my LeLit for very long, and Im still getting to know the machine (and fine tune my skills), but I havent noticed a difference between letting the machine warm-up for 3 mins or 30mins. *ducks and run for cover from the OlSmokeys*

SenojNW Im very happy with my choice of a LeLit PL041 and a Compak K3T grinder, both performance wise and price wise. There is plenty of room for improvement, but my 3min warm-up coffees are more than satisfactory for my needs first thing on a busy morning...... :-*

Just have read in a few places that its a bit risky incase the brew button has been accidentally flicked and it runs dry while you slumber... but have read mixed reports... some say its fine others dont... guess its just a matter of whether you can live with the risk.

I never give my Sunbeam longer than say 10 min warming time so Id say Im not getting optimal results now anyway...

Thanks poet - I think being a CS noob I would probably fall into the same category. Even if I use a short warming time Im probably going to see an improvement just from moving from a low to mid range machine...

Definitely SenojNW, but dont forget the grinder probably will make the biggest difference (as Im sure others with far more knowledge will tell you) .........

Good luck, Im having a ball on my coffee journey, and cant wait until I move on from tweaking machines and skills to exploring beans and roasting

Yeah I made that discovery when I initially got a cheap smasher/blender type grinder with my EM3800 - I upgraded to a Sunbeam conical burr (EM0480) which isnt the greatest but the difference was huge. Existing grinder should do the job for now.
