Alan Frew was also the same guy that sold me my Silvia and when I asked him at the time which was the better machine... well you can guess the answer to that one! Back OT: both Silvia and the Lelit will make great espresso provided you use a suitable grinder and grind consistency and "fresh brown beans that you like!"Originally posted by 60707261766A130 link=1282215185/11#11 date=1282303775Apologies for continuing OT but I recall Alan Frew in one of his newsletters mentioned hed been "selling them since 1994, starting with the Salda Napoletana. While there have been a number of minor internal and external changes, the basic design hasnt changed much in 15 years."

Re: Best Type of Coffee Beans for Silvia
My Imat Junior (previous incarnation of the Lelit/Nemox/Quaha...and not quite as good as a modern Lelit) lasted past 10 years. It would have lasted even longer if I hadnt stripped the bolt on the boiler and then used that as an excuse to buy another machine.Originally posted by 142821392C4D0 link=1282215185/7#7 date=1282276936More to the point show me a 10 year old LeLit machine.

Amen to that! Show me any other machine in that price bracket that holds its value like the Silvia! Italian made quality at Pacific Rim prices! I also never had an issuse getting wonderfull doppio ristretti consistently out of my Silvia.Originally posted by 49757C6471100 link=1282215185/3#3 date=1282265250In all the years I owned a Silvia never had a problem with any beans I fed it, other than Stale or incorrect grind, so its pretty much up to personal preference.Originally posted by 585D415E465B585F4E5B2B0 link=1282215185/0#0 date=1282215185Just wondering which type of beans would be the best to produce great coffee from a Rancilio Silvia !!
For some reason the Silvia has gained a bit of a reputation as being a finicky/difficult machine to use, nothing could be further from the truth, shes a simple easy to use machine that produces excellent results with very little fuss.
Theres a bit of a bash Silvia campaign going on at the moment, the fact remains its an excellent machine with a well deserved reputation, and is very reliable.

Re: Best Type of Coffee Beans for Silvia
I think hes covered the important points,
1. FRESH - if it doesnt give you a high when you open the bag and sniff, its probably not fresh enough
2. BROWN - thats kinda important too
3. Ground to order
In all seriousness, I find I get the best results with Modena from Di Bella, but this is obviously a matter of taste. The Modena is a very forgiving blend for Ms Silvia, Ive found.
