  • $600 budget for the works. What to buy 2nd hand?

You might be able to get the sunbeam with free grinder deal thats on now for fathers day for $600... depends how generous the sales person is! If they say "sorry cant do any deals because were throwing in the grinder already" then just tell them that Sunbeam is giving the grinder, not the store

But for work - 6 cappuccinos at once might take a while on a sunbeam. Even our Jura can seem slow when theres a queue.

How about a plunger or drip and a good grinder? Coupled with a standalone milk frother, you could get some great coffee, and do all six cups at once! If youve tried plunger coffee before and dont like it, try it again with real fresh ground beans from a real grinder - first time I did I had to make another just to see if I was imagining things!

But you have a Minore and a Macap - will you really be pleased with a sunbeam?

just some thoughts... now back to removing that rusted screw...

Youre right iaindb, bit of a drop in quality from the Minore III but I figure it has to be better than the dishwater we get from the local cafe. I hope that with freshly roasted beans we should still get a respectable drop.

I have never been a big fan of the plunger but in fairness I cannot recall ever having tried it with fresh, quality beans so may be worth giving it a go.

I do enjoy turkish, problem is that my fellow collegues are not as open minded.

They will want to drink milk based coffee.

Take your grinder and some good beans in for a day, buy / borrow a plunger, and see if you all like it. Then tell them they can add a milk frother if required.

I got my best plunger results by grinding fine and not leaving it long before pouring. YMMV.

If not you can keep chasing the sunbeam.

          just a thought

Take this any way you like....just my opinion...but avoid the temptation for buy a Sunbeam em6910. They look impressive and do make a good coffee but are riddled with problems and reliability issues. The support is also pretty average. Just look at the countless problems within this forum surrounding this machine.

              My opinion ( and wasted $700 )

Id suggest you all put an extra $40.00 each into the kitty (not much in the grand scheme of things - just another 6 commercial lattes each) and put your money towards getting a Lelit Combi from one of the site sponsors - being in Melbourne, Talk Coffee would probably be your closest. That way you get a good, reliable machine with 12 months warranty on top of it, plus free support for questions, etc.

The Combi has a good quality grinder built into it and is simple enough for all six of you to use and puts out a great coffee.

                Cheers

So how does the 6010 and 0408 rate in comparison?? :

                  Chris

sometimes it can actually be in the attention to detail.......

Ive got an Expobar and Macap and the Sunbeam at work was pretty good (with my fresh beans and a Gaggia grinder).

6 at a time would be a struggle but maybe they wont all be having their coffee break at the same time.

Did a really nice plunger coffee a few weeks ago at a friends party.
                    Try it.

                      ibrik is sensational.
i often have ibrik or perk. at home over espresso.
turkish coffee is great with a little bit of suggar and cinnamon and for those of your mates at work that like milk, add a splash of cream.
                      its great.

and as KK said theyre cheap.. you can usually pick one up for less than $20 - which leaves plenty to get a decent grinder.

As much as I love mine as a home machine, I would rather have a SB as a communal machine. Questionable reliability aside, it doesnt need to be primed, less heating time etc and probably much better suited to being (ab)used by non-snobs - its what theyre designed for. The lelit only needs to be run dry or left in steam mode once by a colleague and the element will go, and the brew-steam-brew waiting would start to get old pretty quick.

Ive also found that people at work (who generally are brought up on cups of instant, not espresso) expect a coffee to be mug sized and boiling. Hence they pump 200ml of water through a single puck, and top it up with milk.

In this case I think a plunger or perc would give a better tasting coffee. Depends on what they define as "coffee".

Oh dear, here we go again, bash the poor old sugar user I use sugar, I always have used sugar, I like sugar in my coffee, I prefer white refined sugar, I dont like being treated like something that just crawled out from under a rock because of my preference, and if one more person tries to explain how I can overcome my dreadful addiction I will bloody well scream.
I always use sugar whether it be in a ristretto, cappuccino or long black.
Dont take this post too seriously, just felt a compulsion to stick up for the socially outcast sugar addicted minority. ;D : :-[
