    Update:

It ended up being a $3 thermal fuse on the steam wand block.  I spliced it in and put everything back together and the unit works like a champ..  It got a thorough scrubbing and flush and tomorrow will get a new collar and seal.. (the old one is worn).

Ill ring sunbeam and give them an earful on their service centres practices..

Im not a appliance repair person and I had it sorted in 30 minutes.  Im pretty cheesed that it took a week and a $300+ quote from their guys..  I still say they never even opened it up.

Be wary folks and question everything.
Quality service support is often under rated and given low  consideration for many things..

Health for example will often have it in the tender documents but when it comes to the crunch... Service is rated so poor that it only takes a slightly lower offer in $$$ to knock out a truly competitive product with great UP TIME.

I have often seen Service support given a 5% value when scoring a tender and trust me real service support should be significantly higher.. However most fail to see until it is too late - but then the budget had to be met (cynic I is).

Conclusion... Question Sunbeam and Question the allotted service agent.. But do it with consideration as the good guys do not deserve crap... They need to be pampered and thanked

I have made comment before about Dodgy brothers and service agents pulling a quick slight of hand re warranty and charging and double dipping.... Most dont but ASSUMPTIONS will get ya every time.

Now where was that under rated thermal fuse uuummmmm

I thought Adelaide had the reputation of having the worst water in Aust.
Thats because its downstream from Canberra.

Sorry danander11 I had to vent.  I get it wrong on occasions; but could never blatantly rip someone off on purpose...

All good on my end, and I appreciate the help.. Ill vent tomorrow to Sunbeam about their "service" centre and let them know how I feel about it..

Perth water is, indeed, terrible... but its what we have. Ill try and sort it out myself and if not send it away.. I miss that morning coffee.

Whilst the 6910 does indeed make a nice coffee, having the tanks rot through after 2.5 years is nuts..
Now for any CSér who has seen the insides of the EM6910 series... That comment had me stumped until ya PM/E-mail.. Though ya was talking about the water tank : :

    Clarification CSérs

danander11 was advised that the Steam Thermoblock had rotted through

And it appears to be just the OT thermal cut-out.. Now the OT unit can fail for a number of reasons, but the main cause is the STEAM is on for too long and a restriction in water flow...

Can not say for certain without hands on but from what I have experienced and from what danander11 has stated ...

The bit that gets me; is once again a service person advises teh user of a particular state of teh unit and then also attempts to sell another brand.. The issue is not the sell, but that the repair/service was either not done OR the person is not experienced.... The assumption is that teh user will suck it up after a couple of years and just buy another machine.

Untill proven other wise... Dodgy servic place with a Capital D :P

PS. Yea I know Perth has crap water, but it would choke and block the steam block not eat holes in it and thus drip water over the cct board.

PPS. If ya know the EM series... The machine must have been used upside down to have that happen. The steam block and CCT board are no where near each other.

Sorry danander11 I had to vent. I get it wrong on occasions; but could never blatantly rip someone off on purpose...

(and to the list of 6910 users lamenting the short life they seem to have)....

Arrrrr yes; but we are Australians and are only too quick to post our dis pleasure VS all those that never post because thay have had great service.

CS and others places are often a focus point for problems.. The up side is that many become educmatied and learn and move forward  8-)

Ah,  dont get me wrong..  I loved the 6910.. Still do and may buy another..  Just think it should have lasted longer.  Of the three people I called here in Perth to have it serviced, 2 refused saying they were tired of customer complaints about short lifespan because of the tanks/elements leaking and shorting the logic board, and no one wants to accept any responsibility for the lifespan after a repair.  All three said it was likely to fail again soon after the repair.

It may all be fluff, but I dont repair them so I wouldnt know...  I was pretty pedantic about the care of it, so much so my wife would just roll her eyes ;-)

Still, maybe its time to move up.  Neither of us cae for the press any more and instant just leaves us choking..  Spoiled for sure.
So go and do it - Splurge Pamper ya self

PS. My wife still thinks the coffee stuff gets Tooooo Much attention

Dont take this post too seriously, just felt a compulsion to stick up for the socially outcast sugar addicted minority.
    Now ya made me CRY..

I like my sugar as well at times and  always have it in my Iced coffee ( raw sugar is my preference)

Just think there is a diferance between liking sweet things (my wife) VS having to sugar coat to hide a crap outcome

Like a complaints / service centre... How many ever ring / contact to say "Get gear guys - Keep up the good work" - Na they only get complaints....

Thus one of the most stressful positions. The service desk  :-X Just look at IT..  I would suggest the large majority of feedback only happens when it fails...  For that matter not unlike our Hospitals and medical service...  As much as they get creamed in the papers and in Politics;  Australia is one of the few places in the world you actually get real care.

    End of emotional hijack

I love my DCM - It has never failed me and neither has any of the 10 plus  EM6910s where I have    instructed people in their use and maintenance  (3 owned - with one now having 3 years in a work place)

But I do not have enough fingers to count those that have failed and needed assistance from CS or me directly..

A few with electrical problems;while  the majority are a direct outcome of lack of understanding, misinformation and less than ideal maintenance.  Should people take this personal - NO !

It is a common issue for many products today where assumptions are made by both the seller and the buyer.

Thus a good relationship with your Supplier / Sponsor / Service agent;  should see you happy - regardless of your choice of equipment.

    8-) 8-)

SO many people do this... And then state they have to add sugar..
Oh dear, here we go again, bash the poor old sugar user I use sugar, I always have used sugar, I like sugar in my coffee, (snip)

Add me to this list as well.. (and to the list of 6910 users lamenting the short life they seem to have)....

Whilst the 6910 does indeed make a nice coffee, having the tanks rot through after 2.5 years is nuts.. The price of repair is half the price of a new one, and even then they wont guarantee how long it will last.. A nice coffee though. I do miss mine.

Oh dear, here we go again, bash the poor old sugar user I use sugar, I always have used sugar, I like sugar in my coffee, I prefer white refined sugar, I dont like being treated like something that just crawled out from under a rock because of my preference, and if one more person tries to explain how I can overcome my dreadful addiction I will bloody well scream.
I always use sugar whether it be in a ristretto, cappuccino or long black.

Hence they pump 200ml of water through a single puck, and top it up with milk.

Ive also found that people at work (who generally are brought up on cups of instant, not espresso) expect a coffee to be mug sized and boiling. Hence they pump 200ml of water through a single puck, and top it up with milk.

In this case I think a plunger or perc would give a better tasting coffee. Depends on what they define as "coffee".

Id suggest you all put an extra $40.00 each into the kitty (not much in the grand scheme of things - just another 6 commercial lattes each) and put your money towards getting a Lelit Combi from one of the site sponsors - being in Melbourne, Talk Coffee would probably be your closest.  That way you get a good, reliable machine with 12 months warranty on top of it, plus free support for questions, etc.

The Combi has a good quality grinder built into it and is simple enough for all six of you to use and puts out a great coffee.

    Cheers
    Di
As much as I love mine as a home machine, I would rather have a SB as a communal machine. Questionable reliability aside, it doesnt need to be primed, less heating time etc and probably much better suited to being (ab)used by non-snobs - its what theyre designed for. The lelit only needs to be run dry or left in steam mode once by a colleague and the element will go, and the brew-steam-brew waiting would start to get old pretty quick.

Is this a good time to try & experience a different brew method

    Greek?Turkish coffee
    Set up is cheap

    KK
    ibrik is sensational.
i often have ibrik or perk. at home over espresso.
turkish coffee is great with a little bit of suggar and cinnamon and for those of your mates at work that like milk, add a splash of cream.
    its great.

and as KK said theyre cheap.. you can usually pick one up for less than $20 - which leaves plenty to get a decent grinder.
