I agree DD, the topic evolved quite quickly, I suspect there are quite a few members (myself included) who rightly or wrongly have a soft spot for Silvia, shes been around and given excellent service for a lot of years) and become a little protective when her honour is bought into question.
However as others have suggested the design is a little long in the tooth and there are other machines available at the moment that seem to offer more for the money, the Lelit, Nuova Simonelli Oscar, and Gee are obvious contenders.
Hope your friend is happy with whatever machine he/she finishes up with.

I guessed this was the case, sensed a note of acrimony in some of the recent posts.
Im a bit confused as to where this is all going in the context of my original post. But let me clarify that my friend is not a CS sponsor and does not know any CS sponsors other than in the usual professional manner.

Nor did I in any way suggest that there was anything acrimonious or otherwise in how CS sponsors conduct their business with Rancilio or anything else.

If anyone is interested, I recommended the Lelit along with the Nuova Simonelli Oscar on the basis of the largely favourable comments about these machines by other coffee snobbers. They will probably go the extra for the Oscar and a suitable grinder.

Both will be purchased from a CS sponsor.

    Not anymore.

I was chatting to a bloke at my local sponsors a couple of days ago, from what I can gather one of the other sponsors isnt playing fair with the wholesale pricing and everyone is moving to machines with better profit margins in this price bracket  ;D

And theres no one more cynical than I where retailers are concerned. I have been in the business long enough to know when a bullsh!ter is trying to bullsh!te another bullsh!ter.

But I have been told a significant number of new machines have quality issues with the elements which need to be replaced with elements made in Australia before retailing.
Bet it was a retailer trying to sell you something other than a Silvia who told you, thats my cynical side.
Of course they may well be right though its the first Ive heard of it.

It was actually a good friend who is a coffee tech and who also sells a range of machines including Domos, Isomacs

Fair enough, however Ive still heard nothing about Silvias coming into the country with dodgy boiler elements, perhaps others can throw some light on the subject.

About a minute Id say.  Not that big a deal, by the time Ive knocked the puck, wiped the screen and filter and poured the milk its normally ready.
Similar with Silvia, takes a min or two to reach steam temp, as you say no big deal.

I dont find it an issue at all. I pull my shot, press steam button, empty PF and get my milk and jug read, and by then lelit is ready to steam.

most mornings it takes me less than 10 minutes to grind beans, make coffee and do a quick clean of the machine (i usually just backflush at night or something). I always drink a cap, so thats including milk etc.

I also turn the machine on as soon as i get up go have shower get dressed etc (which takes me about 20 minutes) by then, the machine is plenty warm enough for my coffee.
