I have to aggree - the 18g basket gives very consistent results, and I think its much easier to get a good shot with than the 7g. The 7g seems to give very poor results on the same grind and tamp I use for the 18g, I suspect I would have to recalibrate my grind to get a good single. Good advice on the pump pressure and valve on the Silvia, thanks - now all I have to worry about with the 21g is my own pump and the fact that I might not sleep for 24hrs.

I used to have a Lucy (Silvia with built in grinder) and used a basket I got from Greg Pullman when I ordered a tamper from him. It was larger than the standard basket but fitted, over time it left marks on the bottom of the group handle. I never went back to using the standard double after that.

I did find that the basket I got with my bottomless group handle didnt fit in the rancilio double group handle.

rvjodal, I am surprised that you cant get 21g into the 18g basket, some of us have been doing it for years, and I think you can get a 28g basket in most bottomless pfs.
However if you are having trouble getting good results with the 18g basket, maybe you should spend a bit more time trying to improve your shots with that basket. I have produced good shots with my original 14g basket (with some practice), although will concede that generally my 18g basket is easier to be more consistent with, and generally I prefer the flavour of the shots from the bigger basket.

habahabanero, go ahead and try the 21g basket, it wont hurt the pump. The pump actually produces significantly more pressure than is required for brewing, and all Silvias have a valve to divert the excess back into the tank and only pass the brew water at whatever the valve is set to. (Which is also why there is no good reason for sensible backflush procedures to cause any problems).

I have a 21g basket bought from coffee parts that certainly fits into the crotchless PF I have - but regrettably Ive never been brave enough to use it. Im mostly concerned about Silvias pump pressure - should I be?

Bottomless PF Slivia - 21g basket?

    Hi there,

I am currently using a 18g ridgeless synesso basket with my bottomless PF on my Silvia V3.

I find this basket does not work well in the standard (shallow) PF.

I was wondering though if i could use a 21g basket in the bottomless PF? Has anyone had experience?
