    Hi Zeke,

I bought an Ascaso Dream about 18 months ago, before doing any research on here. If I had done the research I probably would not have bought it.

The reasons I bought it were that it seemed like a good machine - brass boiler, aluminium body, well built, nice portafilter holder. We were actually out looking at a new clothes dryer and the big retailer we were at had a long interest-free period, however the dryer on its own was not enough to meet the minimum. The Ascaso was sitting there and it looked very nice - ours was the only blue one and it was priced at $489 - other colours were more expensive at around $750, and the red ( I think) was at full price of $1089. So because we were getting it for less than half price and it was interest free it seemed like a bargain.

Turns out the machine is set up for pods and not ground coffee. Fortunately I found Renzo from Di Bartoli on this forum and I went down for a training session and had him convert the machine for ground coffee. It wasnt expensive - about $30 in parts to change the shower screen.

Ive learned a bit in using this machine, and its made some nice coffees, but it has always been unstable in the brew temp and ultimately very frustrating and so after 18 months I am upgrading. Ive had no issues with the quality of the build and components, however it really isnt a good machine if you want to use ground coffee and pull a decent espresso.

$489 was an ok price to pay for this, but at full retail its way over-priced if you want decent coffee. Maybe its ok if you are happy with pod coffee and want a nice looking machine. I dont know what the Gaggia is like but I strongly suspect that the Francis Francis will be the same as the Ascaso - nice looking, but poor tasting.

I would suggest spending a lot less and getting a good single boiler machine like a Lelit if this is your first purchase and you want to learn more about making coffee. The other option is to spend double, or more, on a proper HX machine.

But dont waste your money on the Dream - you can do a lot better for a lot less!

Thanks I appreciate your response. I have been roasting and brewing for about a year and am looking at moving up a notch or two so will look around a bit further. The Ascaso "looks" good but that isnt really what Im after may check out Gaggia or Rancilio.

    Thanks again.

    Zeke

Thanks, I will have a browse around in topics.
    Cheers Zeke

Hi I am looking at buying a new machine and along with thinking of Gaggia and Francis Francis have found an "Ascaso Dream", they go for for about $1200 here in N.Z. The reports I have read are pretty good but of course mostly from the retailers.

Can anyone give me a heads up on the Ascaso Dream, be appreciated.

    Cheers Zeke
