  • Need help please-can someone explain how to backflush my lelit machine

The instruction book says nothing and I do not know what is meant by "backflush with three pulses of water (2-5 seconds ). Can someone who has used a Lelit please tell me exactly what they do to backflush as I am not technically minded and need everything explained in simple terms!! I can put in the blind fliter and switch on the brew function but I do not know what is supposed to happen next or what I am supposed to do after turning on the brew function. Any advice will be most appreciated. :-/

    mishky,

basically, load your group handle with blind filter, then turn on the brew switch for 2-5 seconds, and do that three times.  Each time you do it you will hear the solenoid release water, which will end up in your drip tray.

Backflushing with a product like caffeto is the same, just put the powder in the blind filter, until the white foam stops, then rinse it out and go it all again with just water, pull a sink shot (ie dont drink the first shot you pull).  Do that every 2 weeks or more often if you use it alot.

The machine in the pics is essentially the same as the Combi.

Thanks Guys! So basically put in the blind filter and switch on brew function for 2-5 seconds only then wait a few seconds and repeat twice . That simple?
Dont think I will have the confidence to be taking apart the shower screen though....

Well the process is simple enough - a 2.5mm allen key - but care needed not to strip the thread or overtighten. Take it steady and you should be right. As for further advice though, Ill defer to the experts.

After all - this is the bloke that made a crap tasting cuppa this morning with a pitiful attempt at foam!

I found Greg Pullmans site listed above by Kahvi the most helpful. I also use a piece of packing tape over the bottom of the basket as my blind filter doesnt fit snug.

You lost me at "2.5mm allen key"-guaranteed disaster if I go there and I will never get the shower head back on. lol. But hey thanks for the advice anyway. At least I can backflush now and get some maintenance happening.( PS I also managed to make a bad cup today after four great ones -still not sure why. Very disappointed with myself.)

Re: Need help please-can someone explain how to backflush my lelit machine

I dont know if its just coincidence, but...

For the last week or so, Ive been finding my shots more acidic than usual with unwanted bitterness and almost no crema. I sort of thought change of beans, high humidity, grind or tamping would have something to do with it as I have limited experience and variation in shots is still an issue.

I have just backflushed my teenaged Gaggia Classic for the first time in its life (it was stripped and reassembled about 4 weeks back and Ive run about 500-600gm through since then). I followed the Pullman web site instructions.

The waste shot I just pulled was slightly under dosed, but still came out with beautiful crema settling to 7-8mm. Smelled good and I tasted on my tongue, no obvious sign of bitterness. No other changes, so clearly gunk in the machine was affecting crema as well as flavour. Well find out how it goes with my morning dose of coffee, but things are looking good.

Another learning experience, no doubt one of many to come.

yep, I think it pays to be just slightly pedantic with cleanliness when it comes to an espresso machine!

Thought Id bring this up again for a related question - do you absolutely have to take the showerscreen of for the backflush? and if so, does that also apply when one is only doing a water backflush (i.e. without cleaning solution)?

                        thanks!
