  • Should I give up on my Gaggia Baby Twin?

Having owned a few Gaggia coffee machines in the past, I didnt see any caution in purchasing a Gaggia Baby Twin 3 years ago.

So far this has been a very bad decision on my past, Ive had no end of trouble with it.....from steam "winder" switch failure (twice), pump failure and this morning something a little more terminal (after heating up for 10 minutes, it just died....no lights....no action).

Ive spent over $600 in the last 18 months......so thinking another $200 - $300 to fix it will be a waste of cash.

Especially when I see specials for Rancilio Silvia for $719 delivered.

When working the Gaggia can put out a decent shot, however from what I read Silvia would challenge me to step up.

Any advice from the more experienced would be more than welcome.

Having run a Silvia and a Gaggia classic side by side I found the Silvia to be far better to use in regards to steam pressure and shot consistency (no I didnt have a PID). Coupled with its solid build, longevity, resale value and consistent quality of coffee my Silvia was an excellent espresso machine... not an appliance. Both machines were slow when making flat whites, but the Silvia was always worth the weight! ;-)

another good option might be the Gee , it been getting good reviews and like a silvia or gaggia with PID, can control temp, shot time, infusion etc

my Gaggia came back to life, it turns on. However seems quite unstable, so cant be trusted. I cannot in all good conscience, allow my wife or myself to interact with the world in the morning without the requisite caffeine dose.

I expect that im going to have a new coffee machine for Christmas.

        Thanks for the tips, appreciated.

Yes - Ive given up on Gaggia Baby Twin........

I decided to go ahead and order the Silvia, appreciate the other suggestions however the price v value aspect won the deal for me.  Id rather not be a beta tester for a new product also (having worked in IT for quite some time Im a little cautious).

Id like to offer a pat on the back to Caffe Italia (sorry if its against the rules as they are not a sponsor), who I placed an order with yesterday ($715 delivered) after telephoning to confirm stock.  They shipped the unit within 30 minutes of me placing the on-line order, not only did I get the automated order confirmation & shipment information, but also a personal follow-up.  Better still the shipment e-mail included a direct link to the tracking web site (something other vendors, local or global, should always do).

It looks like my new machine will be delivered less than 24 hours after ordering, two days before Christmas, amazing!

Now to learn to drive it properly so I can impress on Christmas Day!

          Cheers - Steve

Do you also have a grinder? Youll need one to get the best out of Miss Silvia.

Make sure you also buy some nice fresh beans before the festive season starts, you dont want to be caught short.

I have to say this forum is one of the friendliest Ive ever seen, thanks for the additional help.

I was tempted to order a Rocky with the Miss....but my good old trusty Solis 167 is still going strong (about four cups a day for the last 6+ years).

Ive got three of my fav beans all fresh and ready to go.

I need very much for my wife to come home from work.....she has the new machine.

Merry Christmas to all, along with safe and stress free travel for those on the road.
