  • Water flow problem when machine gets hot - PLEASE HELP

I’m having some problems with my Oscar from Nuova Simonelli.

The water actually pours out non stop of the group when the machine is just started (cold) but it intermittently stops once the machine gets hot.

Here is the machine running cold:

Theres actually no water going to the drip pan (bypass) I don’t know if the water simply stops feeding to the group or if its sent back to the boiler.

Once hot, the machine has a hard time pushing water through the portafilter with even an average fine grain (that my Saeco wouldnt have problems with).

Last test I did, there was absolutely no water pouring out of the portafilter and coffee was barely tampered.

The pump seems to work ok when the machine is cold.

Is it a pump problem, a 3 way valve problem or a sensor problem? Is there something I can adjust or does some piece need to be replaced?

    What is teh history ?

How long have you had it ?

What WATER do you use ? (filtered / tap or OTHER ? )

What is your location. A sponsor could be around the corner.

Looks like a solenoid is sticky, but not enough detail or measurements etc. Hands on is often needed to be 100%.

I bought it used... I have zero history on this unit.

Its still under warranty but since I like to fix things I figured Id do some online problem solving first.

I will bring it back to the seller in the next days.

Would descaling do any good? I doubt its a pump or blocked tube issue since it runs great when cold.

Descaling is not the rebooting of the espresso machine world.

Re: Water flow problem when machine gets hot - PLEASE HELP

The sputtering in the second video indicates that the water is being overheated in the HX. Presumably because not enough is flowing through and what is there is being superheated.

Can anyone enlighten me, do the Oscars have a thermosyphon like an E61 HX?

If you choose to go down the fix-it-yourself route, I would suggest a descale of the HX (boiler probably not necessary to be done)

Ive also seen the coil on a solenoid work itself loose and fail to engage properly. Make sure the coil is seated properly and the bolt to keep it in place is nice and tight. The solenoid could also be gunked with scale. Another reason to do a descale.

Could possibly be a pump problem that only presents itself when the pump is hot?

Just noticed one of the suggested videos after watching yours was this

                      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9u8zFCoICM&NR=1

which appears to be the same problem and was solved by a new pump. I would take up the warranty if I were you. Failing that, shouldnt be hard to replace yourself.

Its my first experience with a HX machine but yet I still think the vapor is too hot. I have only but a few seconds too froth the milk before its over heated. Dont know if this is any kind of indication.

I also get loud pops on startup when the element heats up. Is this normal?

The steam power comes from the boiler and is related to the pressure stat setting and water level. Its going to be unrelated to your current problem.

A kettle boiling water makes noise as it warms up, it would stand to reason that a copper boiler would too.

I build a portafilter pressure gauge.

The pressure builds up slowly to 12 bars and pretty much stays there.

The flow is still intermittently stops.

Lots of vapour accompanies the water coming out of the group.

12 bars is way too high. The espresso will be thin and grassy. Ive been playing around with brew pressure on my time off over the Christmas break and can say first hand, 8.5-9 bar is the sweet spot.

I would still hit up the company for the warranty and see if they will replace the pump.
