  • Getting gushers - any advice?

I have a 6910 and Vario, all was going really well.
Since QLD floods I ran out of beans.
Decided to open up a clean grinder burrs (easy). Also just got some beans today - never tried before but from Campos and only 9 days old.
Tried three extractions tonight all gushers, last one had grinder setting significantly finer than Ive ever used before.

    Thoughts:
    -beans no good
-I somehow stuffed my grinder calibration (though grind appeared about right )
    -something wrong with machine pressure

    Oh coffee gurus! Any advice?

I use campos beans almost exclusively and have noticed over the last year that unless they are purchased 1-2 days after roast and used within 7 days of roast they dont give the best shot. But when super fresh they are great. IMO the superior blend is the best Ihave tasted bar none.

How do you know they are 9 days old, they have a roast date on them? Or is it just a packed on date?

Your grinder cleaning may have thrown off the calibration a little, that does happen when you move things around and is nothing to worry about, just grind finer until you hit the right extraction.

The other possibility is stale beans but i would hope thats not the case.

Thanks for the advice guys, this morning I ground much finer, almost to the limit of (about nine notches out) grinder, and got a good extraction
Once I get a supply of the the beans I normally use I should be able to tell if Ive put my grinder out of calibration.
Will try the sweet spot test tomorrow for interest sake.

Got some of my normal beans, they too need the extra fine grind setting. Looks like I shifted the burrs when I was cleaning them :-/

Sorry to be off topic, but I notice you have an the Mahlkonig Vario grinder,
how are you finding it with the EM6910?
Ive been pondering whether to upgrade my EM0480

Hi Jasonlew, sorry for the late reply.  Have you had a look at the following thread? Look at reply #7, it may give you your answers:

If you have any specific questions please feel free.

Overall Im quite happy with the grinder, but its my first grinder and have no reference to compare.

                  Thanks for the response Yash,

Just a quick question, if you weigh 22 grams of beans, and place them in the hopper,
does the grinder dose 22grams? Ive heard that there is minimal grind left in chute,

Also may I ask where and for how much you purchased your machine?

                  Thanks a lot!

Re: Getting gushers - any advice?

IMO most grinders do this, but i am of course often very wrong ....

"if the grinds from the prior "shot" are still in the chute then when you grind 22g it should dose very close to 22g

if you clean it out then when you grind there will be less than 22g "

Better to waste a bit and dose correctly than to muck about weighing beans. Coffee fairies need there share left on the grind tray.....

Yeah, right now I dont weigh my beans before placing them in the hopper, I have a different dosing system, which consistently yields 21 grams,
however, I was just asking because I heard that the Vario retains hardly anything in the chute

+1. Whilst they are not quite to my taste personally, the quality of the bean is superb. If you have a problem with Campos, its unlikely to be Campos!

As Maheel said, if you dont empty the chute and put X grams in the hopper and grind all then youll get X out. The Varios design makes this technique very efficient since it retains VERY LITTLE grinds (say 1 beans worth) meaning I dont bother flushing the old grinds out the next time I make a coffee.

I bought the Vario from Di Bartoli for $680.

Thanks again for the response Yash,
I understand how it works now.
Yeah because currently with my EM0480 I grind for a couple of seconds to clear out the old grinds still left in the chute.

I think I might go that option as well and purchase from Di Bartoli,
as not many stores seem to stock it.

Thanks again for the great help!
