Re: Gaggia Classic white flecks - needs service?

I live in Melbourne so the water is not too bad I hear? I ended up taking the machine to 9Bar Espresso Services here in Melbourne. They have a great 24 hour turnaround, so I got them to check it out and service it / change the seals and all that kind of thing. Today testing out the machine no white flecks at all, so wherever it was coming from it seems to be gone now.

Now the plans are to regularly backflush / descale to hoepfully prevent anything like that ever happening again.

    Thanks everyone for the help.

What is the source of your water? Is it filtered and what type of filtration? What is your location?

If you live in Adelaide and are using unfiltered tap water you will get scale build up very quickly.

I will do that every 3 months have you taken the distribution disc, you will need Allen Key to do that.

I havent removed the screen when backflushing or descaling.. (should I remove it each time i backflush/descale?) but i did unscrew it and soak it and clean the shower screen a while back. Ill try and get a photo up to show you what i mean.

Sounds like scale to me. Can you post a picture?
When you descale/backflush do you remove the shower screen? If not, you may have a build up of scale behind that.

Gaggia Classic white flecks - needs service?

    Hi there,

About 6 months ago I picked up a Gaggia Classic with a grinder off Ebay, and its been working brilliantly.  I have noticed that in the morning when i turn the machine on, wait about 15 minutes then simply pull a double shot glass of water i get a layer of white flecks floating on the top of the glass, that when i pour the water down the sink the flecks stick a little to the side of the glass.

Ive descaled the machine (im not sure how old it is or the condition of the boiler) and that didnt help.  Recently i got a blank basket and backflushed it and it definitely reduced this white sediment.  So i was thinking of possibly taking it to a service center of some kind and getting it serviced.

I was wondering what the experts in these forums have to say?  Is it worthwhile getting it serviced to check out for anything, or simply keep backflushing / descaling and hope it stops the problem?

Any help / hints would be great..  Other then the white flecks which im assuming will just accumulate on the top of the coffee in the basket and not get through to the poured shot, i think the machine is working great.

    Ciao

    SImon.
Working...
