Seems to me "alect" that you need to tee up a visit with Charlie and Deb at JetBlack, and suss out the differences for yourself.... 8-)

    Hi alect,

Semi autos are generally more reliable than super autos as your experience has shown.

A semi auto in your price range that we range is the Lelit PL041E. Adjustable shot length? Just turn the brew off whenever you like  ;D

How does that one compare to a Sylvia (I see you have a used one too)

    Replacement machine

I have posted about my (yet again) non-functional Sunbeam Intuitive - http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1312202818

I get the feeling its time to replace it with something else.  My budget doesnt stretch to a $2000 machine.  I have $600 at most.

Have seen a Sunbeam EM6910 for $498 on sale - apparently well regarded here?
Have also looked at Gaggia Classic.  Also seen a used Gaggia Platinum Vision for $499.

Although convenient, the fully automatic machines seem to always have trouble with moving parts (brewing unit).  So willing to look at semi-auto.  My wife likes to have adjustable shot length (ie water volume per coffee) - at least a single/double.  Must have a steamer.

Not sure which way to turn here.  Or should we just stay with our default macchinetta/cafetiera on the stove....
Working...
