Re: EM6910 and new Beanbay beans

To necro a rather old thread, but this has been an interesting experience. Ive been drinking what I thought was good coffee. It tasted ok, I tend to drink it with 1-2 sugars etc. Anyway Id been running the 6910 on single shot using a dual shot basket as it seemed to be the best I could get. Cut to a few days ago, I accidently hit the dual shot button, rather than wasting it I thought eh what the hell.
Well my god, I could taste heaven. What I thought was bitter, was sour, I think I had been under extracting the shot every single time and kept chasing less and less extraction to get rid of what I thought was a bitter taste.

    NOOOB mistake Im guessing!

happy to help where I can! Youre on a journey! results happen slowly but the return on your time is good!

Your grinder should be pretty good but I dont know if it measures the dose, so each cup may be coming out differently. The Breville smart grinder would control the dose better, and would provie a bit of a quality improvement as well. Something like the Compak K3T might be better though... Still, you have to work on the other variables - the grinder isnt the magic solution, although it does make a huge difference.

OK, now I think I need to go taste what a real espresso tastes like. Im usually a milk and two sugars guy using instant however this Im quite happy to drink with just milk however I still find just a short black rather bitter.

iainb, I appreciate you assistance by the way. Im enjoying working though this. The coffee Im making is certainly not undrinkable but Im sure I can do better. I have to say though. I think its the grinder thats letting me down, the machine seems to do just fine but looking at the consistency of what I get out, Im not happy.

I need to start looking at a decent grinder I think, Im really hating the way this thing clogs up.

Yes, tiny changes can make a big differencew when youre close to the perfect spot!

Try some of the dosing techniques to make the weight or volume of grinds the same each time - or even weigh the beans or measure with a measuring spoon until youre used to the exact amount.

For cleaning my grinder (different brand) I use a toothpick and then turn it upside and tap!

Might up the heat a little as it does taste a bit sour.
remember it will heat up as the pour slows down.

Not sure how I can clean the grinder easily before each group of shots. It requires 4 screws to be removed and a $#%@#$^%$@% stupid little spring switch that once comes out, but hates going back in. Its an EM0480

I find now I have the grinder almost on zero now and Im not binding the machine up, but its still a little quick. I will put in another shim I think.

As for flavour, well it depends. I seem to be hovering around over extracted bitter and not bad. I think maybe due to the fact things happen so fast the difference in 30ml and 40ml makes a difference.

This weekend ill play a bit I think. Might up the heat a little as it does taste a bit sour.

Just pulled apart the grinder and it was caked with fine grounds
I do this before every group of shots - I was doing some demo-ing for some friends on a commercial machine and didnt clean the grinder. I ground a couple of doses and tipped it into my hands - it was mottled dark and lighter brown showing the clumps of stale and fresh grinds. Water will flow differently through the different grinds which probably caused your channelling.

This has undoubtedly improved the taste in your cup - its sad how many cafes sell you what you just cleaned out of your grinder... Now that the water is most likely moving through all of the coffee, it isnt so burnt.

Try it without milk and see what flavours you get - most likely sour as the temperature is probably dropping a bit low as the high volume of water rushing through doesnt get time to heat up properly. Thermoblocks rely on a specific volume of water flow to maintain the right temperature.

Try grinding a bit finer. Also, how much are you putting into the basket now?

    Double basket shapeshifter...

Im thinking I need to delay the changes abit, the em0480 doesnt like pushing all the grind out the front so it seems to take a couple of cups to actually get the set grind after a change.

The single basket...well thats a real mystery to me cant get a decent cup of coffee out of it at all yet.

Sounds a little too coarse now 20-25 seconds would be better.

Are you using the single or double basket?

Sorry about the late reply, have been doing 6am to almost midnight for work and coffee has all been instant!

Just pulled apart the grinder and it was caked with fine grounds, good cleanup and set it to 10, ground the beans, pulls a shot through a double basket. Got about 30ml in 10 seconds... Alittle quick?

But it tastes so good. No bitterness at all, having it as a latte no sugar..

so I set it to where it was roughly, ground the beans and I jammed up the espresso machine.
Different roasts and different batches will grind differently. The same bag will even grind differently as it ages, so watch out for that too!

struggled for the first 10 seconds then it roared out
sounds like it started channeling - all the pressure found its way through a weak spot and created a fast moving channel of water which would have burnt the coffee closest to it, giving you your bitter taste.

I does so I get the most minute screen impression in the to of the puck.
that might be too much - you dont want the screen touching the puck but close to it. Have you tried the 5c test?

Sounds like you need to go coarser.

It really is a matter of playing around to see what is right for you, the grinder you have and the beans you have at present.

It took me about 5 sinks shots, not using the electric grinder as it was way to fine on all settings (have to de-shim it), going to my manual grinder, then working on the quantity and how hard my tamp was until I got there.

I only got my EM6910 the other day

What size basket are you using, which basket and how many beans in grams?

    EM6910 and new Beanbay beans

    Gday all,

Have been previously using Moccopan Verde beans with great success but cracked open a nice 1kg Bag of Sumatran Select that was roasted on the 22nd.

In cleaning the grinder i realised I moved the dial so I set it to where it was roughly, ground the beans and I jammed up the espresso machine. It would not pull a shot. So I went 1 click up and tamped a little less and found the machine struggled for the first 10 seconds then it roared out so much so I had to quickly stop the machine. Got a rather bitter shot and tried again. Same thing. I does so I get the most minute screen impression in the to of the puck.
Do I need to go finer and tamp less or...

    Help..
Working...
