        Re: Decisions decisions....

I have had it a few weeks now and it puts anything near it on price to shame. Many people have said you would have spend double to supas it but even then you may have to compromise on which features you want it to do better.

I am very attracted to the new Breville, the only thing I worry about is it being the first of its kind for Breville, will there be teething problems. I am nowhere near any kind of service centre and it would kill me to have to be without a new machine for months if issues arise!?!?!

Breville did chose to do something better

They simulated 15,000 extractions during bench testing equivalent to over 10 years use. So more like

So how does this Breville justify its price tag over the em6910 and silvia? (ie please explain the dual boiler?)
Perhaps youre looking at this wrong, Sure, the BES900 is pricy compared to the EM6910 and the Silvia, But even those two machines arent equivalent. The EM6910 is a Domestic machine built up from a domestic platform (ie, thermoblock) and built down to a price point comparable to the higher-end machines like the Silvia and the Via Venizia. The Silvia is a single boiler unit that has commercial features. The Breville is a double boiler unit, which puts it smack-bang in the capabilities of a HX machine. Short of the Oscar, (which is a VERY basic HX) there are few machines available at this price.

Too right, but it is also so much quieter before you even consider its performance. I just couldnt live with a machine which sounded like a jackhammer- at any price.

                    Re: Decisions decisions....

I have looked into further and understand some of the differences between the 3 now.

I do wonder with all three being so close in price - why would anyone bother with the two cheaper models (except those on a very strict bidget) given that a double boiler is available. From what I gather if you have thermoblock or single boiler you are compromising shot for steam or vice versa, and with the double boiler compromising neither?

I am anxious (and dont need a crystal ball) because dbs have previously been in a market only for those willing to spend upwards of 2-3K, I am asking about potential problems so that those with the tech knowledge can advise me if they see any cut corners or compromises made in the bes900.

                          Re: Decisions decisions....

                          Just have to say this:

The BES900 is not the answer for every single question what should I buy?

Sure it will be for some but remember guys newbies have to start somewhere and its often about seeing if they even like the idea of making their own coffee at which they dont want to spend over $1000 and waste that sort of money (I know I dont have that sort of money to waste) if they end up not liking the do it yourself route.

The Lelit, Silvia and yes even the Sunbeam can all produce great coffee with a little practice and patience.

If in a little while they get the hang of it, both the Lelit and Silvia have good resale value (they havent wasted money as they have got that value in skills) and they can move up to something that means spending more and maybe producing better

still managed to often get better tasting coffee from our machine than the usual cafe suspects!

I love a milky coffee but sometimes hubby enjoys a straight shot.
In addition I can see for her avatar a family of 4

OP was already looking at the top end of entry machines, IMHO it would be amiss not to point out the added benefits of the Breville which despite the good resell value of the machines on the OPs list if it stops one bout of upgraditis will save in the long run.

                                Re: Decisions decisions....

Thanks guys, I do appreciate the posts.

If I had my way I would pay for barista training, research the ins and outs of top end machines and work out how to pull apart and service them myself... I do love my coffee - its my one weakness

However - hubby, not so much, he said "Didnt we get good coffee out of our first machine that cost $150?" - um... BLECH! And as I have 4 kids I really do find time a factor, not time to make the shot good - thats a given (shut up kids!) but time to invest in forever tweaking and learning new skills.

Right now I want the Breville, would settle for the Silvia and will get the Sunbeam if hubby restricts the budget - I either want a machine new or used by a cs who I know has taken care of it.

Have seen some el cheapos floating around in evil places and sellers say "as new" I contact them wanting to know if that means they never bothered using it and they have answers like "I used it a few times then it stayed in the cupboard so it hasnt needed to be cleaned" Im thinking probably didnt even empty the water and the seals will all be dead - NO THANKS!

Anyway, I am beign patient and waiting for machines on here whilst deperately trying to encourage the hubby to up the budget - have even seen some lever machines that I would love to play with! And dont get me started on beanuts machine - I want that too!

Again I really do appreciate all the posts, it has encouraged me to look further into what I want

                                Sarah
