  • Is this a good deal?? Help please!

Hey im looking at buying my first espresso machine, i dont really want to pay more than about $650 as i still have to buy a good grinder too and dont want to spend more than a grand all up (hopefully)

So i local shop/cafe has a rancilio silvia i think version2, which has only been used by the shop and has had a few shots put through it according to the barista, the machine came to them faulty so has had to have the boiler replaced. He offered it for $550 for 6 months warranty. Is this a good deal?

My other option is to get a Lelit PL041 for around $615 1 year warranty.

I would greatly appreciate advice, iv got the rancilio on hold for 2 days

depending on what your drinking the silvia is either a fantastic machine or a nuisance, if your drinking long blacks and straight shots of espresso the silvia is a fantastic machine, most certainly can not complain about the shot quality. having said that if your take your drinks with milk its a bit of a pain waiting for it to get upto steam temp and recovery time on steam is a tad weak, if you have company over this is going to annoy you endlessly. for the price range your looking at another suggestion is the sunbeam 6910, a fine all rounder but probably not as good on the pure shot of espresso as the silvia but much kinder for those who have milk based drinks

You are comparing a single boiler (sylvia and lelit) to a thermoblock (6910).  Yes on the thermoblock you are going to be able to steam while you pull a shot whilst on a sylvia or a lelit you need to pull the shot (or steam the milk) one at a time.  However, theres plenty of steam power on the single boilers (lelit and sylvia) and I would argue it would take about the same time to texture milk despite the wait because of the difference in time to texture.

Plus an aluminium thermoblock versus brass boilers in terms of life span cannot be compared.  Most 6910 starts to see the end of the road after 4 years (with some repairs in between).  the sylvia and lelit will most definitely out last the aluminium thermoblock machines.

In terms of espresso shot quality they are all comparable.

Going back to the topic, the sylvia is heavier, a little more robust than the lelit, but you are getting a second hand unit without warranty, whereas if you go a brand new lelit you have that added assurance.  Rancilio Sylvia also has a little more of a brand recognition than the lelit.

both deals have warranties and look good to me. If youre going to use it regularly any repeat problems with the Rancilio should manifest within the 6 months warranty. And being your local the hassle with having to return isnt so bad (should it come to that).

The saving will help with buying a good grinder :P

So i ended up getting the rancilio for 550, the guy threw in a nice stainless steal(?) tamp and some nice coffee beans. Dont have a grinder yet so just testing with some pre ground stuff its hard to get some pressure. Hope i dont have any major probs, now im off to get a rocky! or something like that thanks for your help guys and girls!
