Re: Noobie, need help choosing machine combo
Personally, I really like the 6910 but if I had my chance again I would probably buy something else. It does make great coffee but by Gods it is loud. That would have to be my only criticism of the machine really.

Re: Noobie, need help choosing machine combo
yes, its an excellent idea. In the mean time, get notifications on the "for sale" section to get a feel for prices of things, and keep reading the coffee machine category youre interested in to get a feel for what goes wrong (and right!)Originally posted by 0F272A302B2620450 link=1317209882/7#7 date=1317293420I will just use this with my plunger for prob a year until I can afford a proper machine (is this a good idea?)
You might even look into stovetops or pressos for a cheap-ish meantime option.

Re: Noobie, need help choosing machine combo
The smart grinder retail for 300, so yes thats a ripper deal. For that price you cant go wrong. Fresh beans ground on demand will greatly improve the flavour of any coffee making technique.
I think once you get a decent coffee machine (does not need to be expensive) you will be having zero nespressos at work!! [smiley=grin.gif]
Cheers

Re: Noobie, need help choosing machine combo
Thanks for the advice Guys, I might just get the Breville Smart Grinder for now as I saw it for $169, is that a good deal?

I will only be drinking approx 3 cups a week though since my workplace has a nespresso for Mon to Fri.

Re: Noobie, need help choosing machine combo
I agree. The saeco and the BES860 arent great options when you consider the alternatives.
Either go for a 6910 or 2nd hand Silvia in that range... 6910 if you have more milk drinks as there is no wait between brew and steam, or Silvia if you have more blacks cause it will produce better espresso.
Look around, cause lots of places will include a free EM0480 grinder with the 6910. Then as a package, bargain them down to somewhere under $200 for the smart grinder, and you can sell the EM0480 on eBay for around $120-150 brand new in box I reckon.
If I were you, Id get the 2nd hand Silvia and new smart grinder.
Good luck!

Re: Noobie, need help choosing machine combo
You could get a second hand Silvia and brand new BCG800 for under 600-$700 . Second hand Silvias are easy to find.

jbounce
see http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1316307808/17#17 another current post covering similar ground.
I notice the bes860 is being sold cheaply at the moment (low $500s) so is worthy of consideration - not that I have first hand experience. At normal retail, those on this site much prefer the sunbeam 6910 with sunbeam grinder than the bes860.
Consider getting a slightly better machine second hand (silvia, lelit, gaggia classic or the 6910) and pair with a breville smart grinder if you can afford, or the sunbeam grinder if you cant.
the smart grinder wins plaudits as relatively cheap and effective against aforementioned upgraditis (ie good).
Used but as new silvia, gaggia classic and 6910s regularly appear for sale on this site.

Re: Noobie, need help choosing machine combo
Hi and welcome
The Saeco and Breville you mention are slightly different classed machines. I would definitely go for the BES860 over the Saeco, but in a similar price range to the 860 (I think) is the Sunbeam EM6900, which is a dual thermoblock (faster steaming) and classed by many as the "best" in this range...
Is there any reason for choosing those two? What type of coffee do you like, and how many do you drink at a time? This would influence the choice.
Also protect yourself against upgraditis - I lasted 2 years on a Breville before I bought a "real" machine!
Finally, with any of these count on replacing a few accessories to make your coffee even better - a real tamper (~$50), and single wall baskets would be a start.
hope that helps!
