  • BREVILLE BES860

    Hi there,

Im a Newbie so please be gentle

I bought a Breville 860 and im having some troubles with it. Main issue is that the coffee shot is too weak. I put this down to the espresso shot.

From observation, it appears that only the first 10ml of the shot is the dark espresso. From there it goes to a caramelly brown from the remaining 20ml. This is apparently the "crema".

Surely the dark espresso shot should be more than 10ml? Ive tried changing the grind of the beans and that hasnt changed anything.

Ive tried going from a single cup to a double cup and that hasnt changed anything either.

Ive used 1 bag of beans from a gourmet coffee shop and 1 bag from a supermarket (victoria coffee). Doesnt make a difference which one I use, the espresso shot is only 5-10ml

Is this normal for this machine? Does anyone have any exprience with this maching doing this? Would anyone have any suggestions?

Can I post Videos on this site? If so Im happy to post if that helps?

    Cheers

    Simon

    Hi Simmo,

For a start, Id reckon both batches of beans are stale. The supermarket stuff is definitely past it and if the local cant tell you when in the last month they were roasted, their beans are stale as well. :

Have a look over www.espressocompany.com.au/how-to.htm for some great pointers which can be applied to all machines.

My advice is to forget about that single and use the double exclusively.

    Good luck.

    Chris

See if you can post a video onto youtube. Its hard to say what the problem without more info - so the video would definitely help.

One possible solution is what Chris has just suggested, and the factors others include:

What type of basket are you using?
      Double wall or single wall?
      Preground or whole beans?
      How are you tamping?
How much are you putting in? etc

        Hi there,

Im using the Dual Wall, double filter.
The gourmet beans were roasted on the 29/09/2011 and were first used on the 07/10/2011. I had the issue from the first roast.

They were whole beans being grinded in the grinder.

Tamping? Just pressing down on it semi firmly, making sure its even on all sides. The "Espresso Range" guage is in the middle (where it should be) when I excrete the espresso.

Filling the double wall filter to the top.

Hmm... ill see what I can do about the video.

          excrete the espresso.
          Haha!!!  ;D

Try the single walled double filter with some freshly roasted beans - a month is probably pushing it

            LOL as well!

Dont worry about that gauge - it will always be spot on if you use the dual wall filters. Try switching to a single wall one.

The best way for you to see this, is to use the dual wall basket without any coffee. Youll find that the needle will point to the middle of the espresso range.

For now, can you tell me what the puck looks like? Is it soggy/muddy, or is it firm/somewhat dry.

As for tamping - try tamping a bit harder too... I find 8~9kgs works best. I remember getting taught 15kg, but that is a lot of work and you risk RSI if youre consistently doing that.

It is definately not fine enough grind. Its blonding way to early. Funny enough though you dont seem to be getting much mls in the shot?

Is that sequence at the start some kind of pre-infusion??

not fine enough? Im using the factory "dual wall" setting... even on the finest setting it doesnt appear to make any difference.

                      Pre infusion.... no idea.

                        Re: BREVILLE BES860

Gday, Ive owned an 860 for a couple of months and Im now starting to get what I would call good results. The pour in your video did look pretty quick and I would recommend grinding finer. Of course, if youre using the dual wall baskets grinding finer wont make much difference at all. I suggest using only the single wall baskets then seeing how the grind setting effects the pour, keeping the dose and tamp the same each time.

I use the single wall double basket and using home roasted beans I normally have to have the grind setting around 14, almost as fine as it goes. When I get a good 25-30 sec extraction, the needle on the guage is normally in about the 1 oclock position. I also find that the first couple of seconds of the pour is black, followed by a caramel brown for the rest although I thought this was pretty normal.

Looking at the state of the puck after extraction wont give you much of a guide with this machine, as there is a dry puck feature (no idea how it works, but the pucks I get are always dry and come out in one piece, regardless of the quality of the extraction)

Yes, the few short pumps before the long main pump is a fixed pre-infusion.

Hope this helped a bit, Ill try and find some time tomorrow and put up a video of one of my extractions to compare it to, fingers crossed itll be a good one

Please find my latest attempt below on the link.

I have progressed with it, but bare in mind im using the single wall, 2 cup filter. Which is alot of coffee being grinded for such a little result.

I also used the 2 cup button for coffee excretion haha

I tried TMONKEYs suggestion by using a finer grind, i.e. level 14 but found that the best result was on the dual wall setting.

Progression is made but clearly something is wrong as im using alot of coffee for such a little result.

Oh and im using a brand new coffee bag which was from Cosmorex its less than 3 days old.

Hmm, Im wondering, Whats your tamping procedure? are you just dumping the coffee in the basket, flattening it, then locking it in for the pour, or are you tamping level, straight and true, making sure the full amount of coffee is placed in the basket?

I dunno, youve got the colour there, it just seems to be running very quickly for a supposed "very fine" coffee extraction

                              Hmm how to I tamper.

Well I grind it to basically the top (maybe 1mm under the top). Press/tamp firmly making sure all of the coffee is levelish.... its never going to be perfect but I make sure its even and thats about it.

I wouldnt say that I press it super hard, quite firmly though.
