Looks to me like a reaction between dissimilar metals. Brass fitting & SS nut. You can see the corrosion where the nut meets the fitting
I'd be interested to see photos of this fitting on older machines to see if they've changed the design

Hi there - came across this thread after i had the exact same problem - the teardown i was following Domestic Machine Repairs commercial link removed as per the Site Posting Policy was for a v2 i think and the hose is different. I sheared off whatever that middle part was when attempting to turn it
Is anyone able to let me know which part i've damaged - the hose or the valve - and what i did wrong?
Thanks
//sorry didn't realise it was a commercial link - i hadn't paid much attention to the header, just assumed it was blog based on the content.

Re: Ms Silvia leakage
Thanks for the plug Ausnadian, and glad you are well on your way again without having to wait until after the end of this month to have the thing seen to under guarantee.
Also noting of course that the cost of the parts is not the real cost of the parts. Job would have been done under guarantee but you would have paid the cost of freight both ways. Your parts therefore cost what they cost less the price you would pay to freight the machine both ways to get the service done under guarantee. The difference between them is then the cost of convenience for having the machine back up and running probably 3 weeks ahead of waiting for it to be repaired under guarantee.....thats priceless ;D!
The expansion valve could be rectified in a jiffy, but the flexi line is a binner
Enjoy the coffee,
Attilio

Re: Ms Silvia leakage
Not sure mate, basically Attilio diagnosed what I would need from the pictures, then couriered them to me, I did the work, and now it is running brilliant again. Such a good machine.Originally posted by 36313B33372139363F580 link=1326254123/13#13 date=1326985040Can you share what reasons caused the break?
It appears as though the metal / machining was substandard but since I never did that metallurgy degree, I will leave it to the experts.
I have emailed the original place of purchase to see if they would refund some of the cost and in turn I would send them the bad parts to inspect and perhaps go back to Rancilio with them. If not, I am open to sending them to Attilio so he can have a closer inspection if he wishes.

Re: Ms Silvia leakage
I believe Sam is referring to the flexi pipe rather than the expansion valve.
I disagree the failure has anything to do with descaling or backflushing solutions or the modus operandi and I strongly disagree it has anything to do with whether the machine has ever been "properly" descaled.
The worst case scenario in a worst case location with worst case water, in a machine that has not been descaled over a long period of time, would be that the hole in the middle of the union might eventually block up.....not break off.
More likely caused by "over" machining of the male fitting at the end of the flexie water line during the manufacturing process (not Rancilio....the company the makes the water line) which is just the kind of failure the equipment guarantee is there to protect clients against.

Hi Sam123 and Ausnadian,Originally posted by 5F59414D420247552C0 link=1326254123/9#9 date=1326544656The braided steel tube connecting the Brass OPV assembly to the pump cannot be found anywhere for replacement. I would really appreciate if anyone could help me find those spares.
The part should be the OPV used in Silvia and it can be obtained from many sources, such as coffeeparts item code 200152.
Your units problem may be inappropriate descaling or the whole pipes are not competely purged after the use of detergent in backflushing. The worst case could be the unit has never been properly descaled.

Re: Ms Silvia leakage
Hello All, I am very new to coffeesnobs. I own a Silvia V3 purchased from an online retailer in 2011.
I have exactly the same problem as Ausnadian. I noticed my machine was leaking after a routine descaling this morning. I took off the 4 screws on top and found that there was leak exactly at the joint pointed out by Ausnadian in his picture with the tube broken off at the screw joint.
The braided steel tube connecting the Brass OPV assembly to the pump cannot be found anywhere for replacement. I would really appreciate if anyone could help me find those spares.
Thanks
Sam123

Re: Ms Silvia leakage
I appreciate that Attilio, I would be happy to do the work myself, so if the company I bought it from doesnt come to the party ( I will name and shame them) then I will get you to ship me those parts.
I bought the machine before I found this website, so I didnt get it through a site sponsor, but everything I have bought since then has been!

Re: Ms Silvia leakage
Stating the obvious but your guarantee is for the purpose of protecting you against any failures due to faulty manufacturing and assembly, which if the manufacturer could have foreseen would happen, they would have taken steps on the assembly line so this wouldnt happen now...... Its a mechanical object, the braided water line failed (not even manufactured by Rancilio), you are protected, no ones "fault", your supplier will (should) honour his guarantee, and so on...Originally posted by 784C4A57585D505857390 link=1326254123/2#2 date=1326326024....found that the intake pipe from the pump seems to have rusted and just snapped, pretty poor quality for a machine less than one year old.....cant get it out....tried pliers but it didnt budge etc.....
If it were covered under my own guarantee, my workshop wouldnt be wasting time drilling anything out but would simply replace the brass fitting and braided stainless steel water line, pressure test and return the machine to you in good working order at no charge except for any freight costs involved.
If its any help my own workshop has been open every working day through the Christmas period and only closed on weekends or designated public holidays. If you are in a hurry we can do the job but as the machine doesnt seem to be one of our own imports we will charge for the total job as the guarantee is not ours. It could however expedite the repair for you and get you going again quite soon....OR....we could supply the 2 parts (at invoice price plus freight) for you to have fitted down there
Hope that helps.
Attilio
very first CS site sponsor.

I sympathize though. Hopefully it wont take long once they re-open.

Re: Ms Silvia leakage
Yeah its a V3, and I have sent off an email and had a quick phone call with the owner of the business, but they are all on holidays at the moment, but he still said he will do what he can for me as soon as he can check out the email and what not.Originally posted by 7A7F7C7C727B6C1E0 link=1326254123/4#4 date=1326329947Presumably this is a V3 ?
If the Cafe down the road wasnt so crap I wouldnt be in such a hurry to get her back up and running, anything I can do to speed that up I will

Presumably this is a V3 ?Originally posted by 2317110C03060B030C620 link=1326254123/2#2 date=1326326024So an update and help required.
I couldnt find my receipt anywhere so bye bye warranty, I pulled it apart and found that the intake pipe from the pump to boiler wasnt even attached properly any more. the inside seems to have rusted and just snapped, pretty poor quality for a machine less than one year old. You can see where it has snapped in the third picture, and I would like some advice on how to get this out, pointy nose pliers dont move it at all, I guess a bit of rust build up has it stuck. could I drill it without killing the threads, is there a good way to do that?
any help would be appreciated. I am so frustrated.
If so, its likely to have a serial number both on the base and inside your manual.
Hopefully your vendor has a record of its purchase.

Re: Ms Silvia leakage
If its under a year old and you legitimately bought it from a reputable store, a bank statement with the transaction highlighted is sufficient for proof of purchase.
