Stop in the middle of the steaming, talk to your guests, top up boiler - finish steaming - pull shots
Its your machine BT, use it in any manner that suits you.

Steam like a liter of milk in one or two batches
I wouldnt advise that. Its a recipe for a new boiler.

        Re: Rancilio Silvia Slow?

I find the Silvia fine for back to back.
        My workflow is:
        1) Pull the shot then flick the steam on as the shot is nearing the end.
        2) Wait for the steam temp to hit 140c then steam, I find after steaming milk for two the temp at the boiler is 120c.
        3) Purge through the group head into a tupaware container so the temp comes down (hits 80c for the boiler to be full again) and the boiler refills.
        4) Wait for boiler to reach brew temp and repeat.

The only time I am idling is waiting for the steam temp to get up. After the purge to get it to brew temp I am busy grinding and tamping anyway.

My setup has a PID installed and I think it makes a big difference in duration.
