    Re: Rancilio Silvia Slow?

I find the Silvia fine for back to back.
    My workflow is:
    1) Pull the shot then flick the steam on as the shot is nearing the end.
    2) Wait for the steam temp to hit 140c then steam, I find after steaming milk for two the temp at the boiler is 120c.
    3) Purge through the group head into a tupaware container so the temp comes down (hits 80c for the boiler to be full again) and the boiler refills.
    4) Wait for boiler to reach brew temp and repeat.

The only time I am idling is waiting for the steam temp to get up. After the purge to get it to brew temp I am busy grinding and tamping anyway.

My setup has a PID installed and I think it makes a big difference in duration.

Steam like a liter of milk in one or two batches
I wouldnt advise that. Its a recipe for a new boiler.

Stop in the middle of the steaming, talk to your guests, top up boiler - finish steaming - pull shots
Its your machine BT, use it in any manner that suits you.

I read a whole lot about flying planes. Sadly, nobody will let me fly theirs
Why not Chris? if what your reading is from a credible source then surely you should be well qualified to take the controls of an aircraft, and of course write with some authority on the subject. ;D

Steam like a liter of milk in one or two batches, pull four shots, job done, no fuss
Thats asking a lot from a small machine, In my experience with a Silvia, I never attempted to steam a litre of milk in one go, dont think it would be up to the task, in fact it would be pretty well at its limit with 500ml.

    Hi All,

I had all but decided on purchasing a Silvia, which seems to have a solid reputation until I saw this clip on youtube which tests the speed of 5 machines each making 4 lattes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KUlocRydXw

This has  put me off a bit, and I have started researching more expensive machines, and also looking at second hand options.

I dont quite understand what enables a machine to pour a shot and steam continuously, but am guessing its the size of the boiler, or having independent/dual boilers.

I notice there are a few cheap machines with E61 type group heads which look the part, but are also quite slow... (low end ISOMACs.. etc)

Does anyone have comments about the Silvia workflow, and what attributes/features/components I should be looking for?

I stated I read which implies not from my own experience. Sorry for any confusion on that. I spent months researching machines and reading threads...many times reading the same threads over and over analysing. I read about the lower end non commercial e61 heads on a different coffee forum. This person is very dedicated enthusiast on espresso machines and I respect his opinions. Im not say anyone has to, but I like to contribute what I have come across

You probably would be fine with a cheap E61 machine, but I have read that the non commercial E61 groupheads do not have good jet flows for the intended thermosyphlyn. Something to keep in mind if your looking for perfection.

Not meaning to be rude DM but you have not yet mastered your Silvia, now you are offering advice on a machine you have never owned. :
