if you could save extra $300 - $1200, then BDB will be in your price range and thats from bricks and mortar ship!

Otherwise I think theres still a 2nd hand BDB in the for sale section

Other-otherwise I like the sound of the Lelit PL41TEMD (with pid) but never seen one in the flesh.

              Re: Beginner espresso machines

On topic - I really like the Lelit PL41TEMD (with pid). I think the latest model advertised by jetblack and probably others looks great and sounds great, but Ive never played with one, so see in store for details! It takes away guess work or manually fitting a PID and associated technical / warranty issues. If you want to save the cash you just need to learn consistency in your flushing, and perhaps accept a bit longer time to make an espresso.

Off topic, if anyone has a problem with my posts, just pm me and Im happy to apologise for the offense (with my shotgun (that was a joke)) ;D :-? :-/ :-X :-[ :P

                  Re: Beginner espresso machines

Its got the balance of a 2 year warranty - 18 months I think. Breville expect at least 10 years life out of one.

depends on the age - if its under 2 years it comes under manuf. warranty (get the receipt, otherwise get the owner to ring their store of purchase and print a copy of the receipt, otherwise lower the price accordingly)

Yes, its worth buying second hand. Check the OPV setting although it may make less difference than you think (and Breville should adjust for free for you if it was one of the early-early models).

do they have a shorter use life then the lelit or silvia
This is the most hotly debated topic of the 900 (which means the coffee it makes must be ok!). In summary, it has a 2 year manuf. warranty (most others 1 yr); and has a big manufacturing factory behind it saying theyre improving their quality. Your treatment of it will probably have more effect on its lifetime than its quality, however the model hasnt been around for 10 years to prove it.

You would be more happy with the 900 than any non-pid single boiler, and probably more happy than the above pid single-boilers too.

We dont actually know, Certainly theres not been a lot of failures reported, (most being the OPV issue But the unit hasnt been out as long as the Silvia to get real "use life" figures.

However, Having said that, Its all to do with the treatment of the units, Treat them well, Theyll last a lot longer then if you didnt. Ive heard of some silvias being gunked up with scale within months of purchase, etc.

As to your list, you seem to have your heart set pretty hard on a Single Boiler, While both these models are nice, theres one critical thing that would make me choose the Silvia over the Lelit, and thats the Basket Size. However, both machines are extremely modifiable and could possibly allow you to find the god-shot

However, I must take umbrage at some of your comments within this thread. There is no call to be insulting people over their life choices.

Play nice, or go home, Else Andy Takes his Ball Home :-X
