Absolutely Barri - backflushing is allowed for and is well covered by the manual. It does have a three way valve. Backflushing uses an insert into the single group to seal it and a program provides an automatic intermitent flush every 30 seconds or so for about 5 flushes or therabouts. Very easy to do and does get the screen etc nice and clean.

    Cheers.

PS. The three way valve discharges into the drip tray allowing the PF to be removed with no pressure behind it immediately. It discharges straight away at the end of the pull, either on manual pull or full auto.

I have not suggested that anyone is one-eyed. But statistics are interesting. I have said it before that Sunbeam must be selling many more of these machines compared to the Silvia - marketing and availablity in general stores. As such if both have a 2% failure rate then the 2% of the higher seller will translate to more complaints for that product than the lesser selling one. As such I dont think it can categorically be said that the first machines were a dud. But at the end of the day we all have different views of these things.

              Cheers
yes but on this forum where we are hearing the complaints there are probably more people with silvias then sunbeams.

As has been pointed out it is not the number of complaints that is important, but rather the percentage of units sold that generate complaints.

Assuming that the members of CS who have bought said units are a randomly distributed enough crowd who purchased said units in enough randomly located retailers then we can say that they are representative of the purchasers of said units in all of AUS and that the rate of failure of said units among them is then representative of said units throughout AUS.

So lets find out what that rate of failure is among us.

I will open 2 polls. One for the EM6900 and one for the upgraded EM6910. The results will be hidden until I close the polls in one week.

why not do the Silvia including scaling such as found by Greg Pullman and leaking around the group seal as published recently also?

A silvia poll sounds like a good idea. It might also be nice to somehow incorporate longevity into the poll as well.

Ha ha I was wondering when someone was going to ask the Silvia to also be held up to the light.

Wouldnt want to be seen picking on any one brand!

A wise man said in one of these boards recently that in many cases people dont actually search the web UNTIL a machine breaks. Ie most people just buy and then use and dont think to search the web to do what the instructions already tell them. Thus the people who actually register here might already have a problematic machine and want answers - which naturally affects the figures.

I am not defending Sunbeam. The fact that an Australian company is making machines is a good thing but I am not too concerned otherwise. What I dont see however is why a poll is called for in the first place - it gives people surfing this site, or registering, an impression, merely from the poll under the Important Topics section that the machines must be suspect, because of the very need for the poll (and who determines that such a poll is needed and on what criteria).

I for one am becomming a bit disappointed about such an approach, particularly where there are no polls for competitors for the 2 Sunbeam machines.

                        Good luck with it.

Another poll for Silvias? Not a problem. In order to make it as directly comparable to the running Sunbeam polls it will have to be limited to repairs needed with-in a year of service seeing as that is all the longer the Sunbeams have been on the market.

Thanks Java - from the perception point of view the existence of a poll for Ms Silvia makes things more balanced, even if as I suspect for the EM6900 the EM comes out significantly worse. I dont discount what I said earlier about people looking for sites when they have problems. Further a number of people on this site, I bet, have surfed looking for info and then bought a Silvia off a site sponsor (more power to them) (and that wouldnt apply to the EMs) - and again such persons would be people who didnt surf and register because of a problem. As such any stats are going to be against the EMs from the outset to an extent, but what that extent is, and what this Poll all means in the end is dubious in my humble opinion.

                              Cheers

I surfed, including this site and was leaning towards a Silvia, Sunbeams etc were crossed off my list very early as I was looking for something robust.

In the end I did not get the Silvia either.

ozscott you seem to be taking this too personally.

To stand on your side of the fence for a moment (as Im not on either side really), one could point out that Silvia owners are forever tweaking (PIDs) and helping each other out with tips and tricks (temp surfing and warm up cheats).
This could suggest to the newcomer that Silvias are inherently full of shortcomings.

Back to the polls though, lets wait and see the numbers.
Who knows, maybe youre right and onky 2% of owners will report faults.
On the other hand, maybe it will be 98% and then even the auditor in me will consider that again you are right and mostly those with a problem registered only to complain instead of researching first.

I wonder though, if everyone thinking of buying a 6900 found this forum first and most of them changed their minds, would that then lower the reported problems with 6900s and improve their reputation, thereby causing more people to buy them but then cause more people to run into problems and complain, creating a neverending cycle (at least until the 6910 came out)?

: Methinks it is possible to think too much.
