Re: Novice seeking help for Saeco Via Venezia
update. tried one more with less pressure on the tamp (but thouht the pressurized filters werent sposed to be fussy) and it came through ok but thin and bitter. minimal crema. so first I was too heavy on the tamp and now too light? just a matter of practice with the new filter?? maybe the new model is a different pressure rating or maybe the old one was worn out after all?

Re: Novice seeking help for Saeco Via Venezia
hullo sure is the silly season. Had to get new portafilter for Via Venezia...long story. New one $90 later is slightly different than old one but I cant pull the filter out. Is that right?? Does that matter? From what Ive read I will want to try a non pressurized filter down the track a bit.. but if I cant get this out Im literally stuck with it...?! have tried to brew 3 cups and barely any espresso is coming out. Does that mean the pump isnt up to handling the pressure from the new filter? Am I going to be able to serve coffee with Christmas? cheers

Re: Novice seeking help for Saeco Via Venezia
Fantastic!! Thanks Mal, that makes a lotta sense. Ive printed out your pointers and will be sitting down with my new toys as soon as I get home from work. Me thinks I will be nursing a massive caffeine headache tomorrow morning (assuming I can sleep after tasting many test shots! ;D

Re: Novice seeking help for Saeco Via Venezia
Onya mutt,
Starting out on a fabulous journey
. With a grind for espresso, youre looking to achieve a grind that feels a bit like cooking salt when rubbed between your fingers.
After the machine has been allowed to warm up for between 30-60 minutes..... Using a Double Basket to start with, fill the PortaFilter to a slight mound, tap on the bench two or three times, refill to a slight mound again and tap a couple more times, level off with a finger or back of a knife blade, etc then tamp down evenly with a force of between 12-14Kg (what ever is comfortable for you and easily repeated).
Lock the PF into the Group then with a Stopwatch handy, pull a shot and observe the characteristic and rate of flow into a measuring glass (if possible) and stop the shot when 60ml of liquid is in the glass, or 30 seconds of time has elapsed. If less than 50-60ml is poured within 25-30 seconds then you need to increase the grind size by one notch at a time until you achieve this result. If more, then you need to decrease your grind size until the ideal result is obtained.
The most difficult part when you are starting out with a new machine or any machine if its the first time, is to become consistent with your dosing and distribution, and tamping force/action. Until you become consistent in this area, it is very difficult to diagnose problems you may be having in other areas, so practice and more practice is the order of the day. Youll get there though, we all had to start at the beginning at some stage and it really is just a matter of being observant, understanding the process, lots of practice and making one small adjustment at a time. Sounds easy doesnt it
. Anyway mate, all the best,
Mal.

Re: Novice seeking help for Saeco Via Venezia
Great advice in this thread for the novice with a new Saeco V V!!!
I unpacked mine last night (along with a Sunbeam em0480 - I wanted the Iberital challenge but couldnt afford it in the end). Just wondering if anybody has any advice about a good grind setting that would work with the V V?
Thanks for your help.

Re: Novice seeking help for Saeco Via Venezia
Hi Snobbette,
With regards to leaking steam wand, I have had the same problem with my Via Venezia.
As far as I am aware most small semiauto Saecos are basically the same under the skin.
If you are able to get at the innards of your machine, the steam valve
knob shaft is locked onto the steam valve shaft with a tiny screw .
I found that one of my set Stanley precision screwdrivers fitted perfectly.
Loosen the screw , turn the knob a few millimetres anticlockwise and then tighten the screw again.
This should fix the problem.
I have to bleed off a fair bit of water from my steam too.
Regards
Herbie

Re: Novice seeking help for Saeco Via Venezia
Hi Balattack
Why do I run 2 shots of water .? To heat up the portafilter thoroughly.
The 3 second brew and 5 second pause simulates the pre-infusion that commercial machines perform automatically.
Green light just signifies that the boiler is up to temperature and element is no longer heating.
Thank you for your kind remarks.
Regards
Herbie

Re: Novice seeking help for Saeco Via Venezia
Love my ECM, but then the Via Venezia was (and still is for my son) a great little machineOriginally posted by snobette link=1173612090/15#25 date=1174544957Hi there everyone
Thanks on all the help re finding un pressurised pf for saeco vv (Aroma in my case, same size and fit as vv I HOPE :-/ ) I think Ill hang in there with my p/pf for a little while anyway - I modified it by taking out the inside spring a while back - I get the shots ok in the right times now but have compromised the crema but I think this will improve when my blade grinder( yeah I know! :-[ ) dies ? :-X you know how these thing JUST happen !?
If anyone out there has any other tips on getting the best from a SAECO AROMA (sometimes aka classic) home machine lets know . I am finding that it drips quite a lot of water from steam valve now-even more since descaling recently, and has a lot of wet steam too that I have to dry out prior to steaming my milk than ever before-- anyone else have these probs or solutions too??
thanks again guys - ps was in Rio coffee Adelaide yesterday while someone picked up new ECM - where are you out there -you didnt put it in MY car like you said
;D Oh I need a coffee and a Lottery ticket win !!

Re: Novice seeking help for Saeco Via Venezia
Snobette,
Go to Simply Coffee in Rundle street, Kent town and have a chat with Peter. He should be able to help you out.
As for the wet steam - I have a classic and I get a wee bit of this when I have my first coffee of the day. It is also a bit of condensation too. Before I do my extraction I open up the steam valve to bleed this off and then make my coffee.

At Caffe Bianchi in Leichhardt it is $45- black, uses same 53mm baskets as pressurised one- Greg Pullmans tampers do wonders for it.

Re: Novice seeking help for Saeco Via Venezia
Gday snobette and welcome to CoffeeSnobs [smiley=thumbsup.gif],
Which Saeco "Aroma" model do you have snobette? For some reason they have named two quite different machines with the same name.... Ones a pretty decent single group commercial and the other is a small consumer machine. Hear from you soon,
Cheers,
Mal.
