Re: Delonghi 1385
Rolley,
There is a pre loved Sivia (with quite a few accessories) for sale on the board for $550:

Might be worth some serious thought.

Re: Delonghi 1385
Rolley,
Yep, you are looking at spending serious dollars.... and as Mal so correctly said above...
"before leaping in and buying a DeLonghi "appliance" when you could own a fair dinkum specialist espresso machine for the same money"....
You certainly can get a specialist espresso machine for your money - and you wont regret doing some more research.
I reckon the reason they make such a great deal about "Convenient cord storage" is that they expect most users to put them away in a cupboard and only bring the machine out on special occasions....
And no self respecting CoffeeSnob will want to do that

Re: Delonghi 1385
Yeah thats awesome, thanks a ton for all the feedback. Ill spend some time this weekend thoroughly going through all the gear youve mentioned. Youre right about taking more consideration, and I think youve talked me around
rightly so though
Cheers

Re: Delonghi 1385
In addition to what the guys have recommended above and in the same price range (and a hell of a lot better machine than the DeLonghi) is the current model of the Imat Mokita..... very similar in spec to a Silvia but $250 less in cost and will pull great shots day in, day out so long as you do your part. Id give this a lot more consideration before leaping in and buying a DeLonghi "appliance" when you could own a fair dinkum specialist espresso machine for the same money,
Mal.

Re: Delonghi 1385
Rolley,
I dont know the Roma.... so a bit hard to compare... Id guess a little better.
But I would rate the Gaggia Classic much higher than the Delonghi (and cheaper)..... even the smaller, cheaper Gaggias IMHO would beat it.
Edit: agree with Marcstolks comments above as well.
Then for a few more dollars you could pick up a Sunbeam 6910.... and that would beat the Delonghi as well (and texture milk at the same time as extracting).....
Yeah, the Delonghi is probably OK with a bit of fiddling..... but from my brief experience with it.... if it was priced at around $300.... Id say it was value.... but at around $500..... there are better machines (you are paying $200 for the look rather than ease of use / quality of coffee produced)...
And you will need a good grinder with any of the above.....

Re: Delonghi 1385
Id buy the Sunbeam EM5800 (you can adjust the brew temp) over the Delonghi anyday... and have money to spare...the TB is electronically controlled like the bigger brother, EM69xx
My 2 cents worth :-)

Re: Delonghi 1385
MMMmm yeah Ive seen the Illy ones, theyre very nice indeed. Im ruled by a tight budget at home though, otherwise definately! I mean, you can grab the delonghis for less than $500, the stainless Illy would be the only one I want, and its $800 odd i think?
Even though everyones sort of had negative comments about the Delonghi 1385, I still might THINK about getting it. The reason really is that I actually drink most of my coffee at work, on the em6910, so at home, Ive just got a little Breville Café Roma Stainless for a quick hit on the weekends. Ive had it for years, and even though its a baby in terms of espresso machines I know it so well I can still tweak it to make a nice brew.
Despite not being that great, would the Delonghi 1385 be a significant improvement from the little old Roma?!! ;D Im sure it would!? Ya see where Im coming from now? haha
Im mainly just after an improvement - without going all out tops. Things like the basket type (not dual floor), basket size (Roma is tiny), better temp control (the Roma cools down too much half way through your pour).. you know, stuff like that. What do yas reckon?
Is the Delonghi that bad that, maybe I should just save the extra (and argue the extra with my wife haha) and get the Illy?
Either way Ive got a fair while to think about it, gonna wait until at least after tax time.

Re: Delonghi 1385
I too had a brief and unpleasant encounter with a delonghi and can totally relate to the above statement. I unfortunately bought one off ebay but unloaded it as quickly as I tried it, " man that thing was the least".........Originally posted by JavaB link=1178527689/0#5 date=1178534538Why would you plug it in in the first place?Originally posted by Thundergod link=1178527689/0#4 date=1178534214

Re: Delonghi 1385
Renzo has a big shiny new machine in the front widow with a on/off steam lever.
A Mondiale IIRC.
As for the description of the DeLonghi, I can never understand what the big deal is about "Convenient cord storage".
Why would you unplug it?

Re: Delonghi 1385
Mmmmm
From memory the basket is either 58mm or close to it - and fairly deep.
The PF is lightweight Aluminium.... There is a brew temperature gauge - so you could probably temp surf using a cooling flush.... but nothing you can do about the steam..... and from memory the pressure dropped fairly quickly..... >
The steam valve is operated by a lever with a large knob on the end.... Off is just over vertical - so it stays there...... bring it forward and it opens the valve.... once over centre it keeps falling until wide open..... So unless you hold it in position ( a little hard with one hand holding the jug, the other underneath checking the temperature.... and the third hand ?????? :-/)
Probably OK to hold the steam valve with the auto frother - if you like soap suds rather than microfoam.

Re: Delonghi 1385
hrm thats no good ay. I wonder how big the basket is? Theres nothing worse than a tiny bloody basket... well.. there is.. but yeah!
Thats a bit strange about the steamer only having full on or off positions, and I take it the wetness and temps arent customisable?
