Re: Best price for Sunbeam EM6910

You can change your display name.
My actual member name is fatboy_1999, but my display name is fatboy.
In IE, if you hover the mouse over my user ID, the info on bottom left of window tells you the user ID. Most of the time it is the same as display, but it can be changed.

Thanks guy for all your feedback.

Im still a newbie in this scene, so "ozscott" when you say "another thermoblock machine" I dont really know what you mean.

And also being a student a machine like em6910 is kinda already stretching my budget, at the moment Myer has 10% off small appliance which includes the sunbeam, so its $630, but i think if i should around i could get it even cheaper, maybe bing lee?

Mate - Dennis said in effect that the EM was just another thermoblock machine - ie he may be saying that you should go to a kettle machine. The Sunbeam is by far and away the most advanced DUAL thermoblock machine that I have heard of and delivers for milk coffees - please search and see the very detailed and balanced review by Greg Pullman on this site (he is the tamper guy - ie makes them - get one because it will improve your coffee). He compares the EM to the Silvia. Frankly for the money the EM is hard or impossible to beat depending on your perspective - the only other option for really good coffee with a different bent is the Rancilio Silvia which is excellent also, but a bit dearer. I dont want to cover all the old ground about this again (mainly because it fires up debates well gone) so please find the comparo that I mentioned - any further questions not answered by that I would be happy to help. Overall I love the EM6910 and it has performed flawlessly.

        Cheers

Yep ozscott - spot on. Though having read golden86s comment about already stretching the budget, and being a learner, Im sure if you choose the Sunny you will be delighted. All jokes aside, they are a very forgiving machine to learn on and make a decent coffee along the way. Maybe in a few years, once youve completed your degree, you might think about upgrading again.

Id be interested to know if you have a grinder, and what type of beans you are thinking of using?

Re: Best price for Sunbeam EM6910

Dennis - I can understand suggesting that he stretch to a Giotto to stop upgraditis - but the Silvia isnt going to stop upgraditis later on if a person is keen on moving to a rip snorter (ie HX).

Golden - the 6910 is far and away a better machine than the 6900, so steer away from older 6900s.

            Cheers

Re: Best price for Sunbeam EM6910

Even if the beans are freshly roasted they will go stale after 3 minutes once ground. So in short a grinder is necessary yes.

Gloria Jeans will be the same as supermarket coffee yes. Roasted beans only really last 3 weeks when they are whole beans.

Why did I know you were going to say that! : You might as well buy your coffee from the supermarket - it will be cheaper than GJs and you get more variety to choose from.

A good grinder is a must have and at the upper end, can cost you more than the coffee machine you are intending to buy. A decent entry-level one will cost around half of the machine cost.

An alternative is a good hand-grinder like a zassenhaus and also good for a bit of physical exercise. If youre making no more than one or two cups at a time then this might be an alternative that will give you excellent quality.

I happen to own a few grinders and am going to offer you a random act of kindness, with a few provisos, namely:

                  1) You definitely go ahead and buy a coffee machine
                  2) You use what I give you - in other words, not necessary to use it exclusively, I just dont want it collecting dust on a shelf. And if one day you find that you are no longer using it, you will give it away to someone who has a need for it
                  3) You will need to pay for the freight - Ill pack and send it and live in Sylvania, Sydney. So if you live in Oz Im guessing it would cost between $10-$15. The zassenhaus grinders are worth around $150
                  4) Once you receive it, perform a similar, random act of kindness within your means

With the money you save I suggest you then buy yourself some brown beans from Andy, or maybe get a popper and start roasting your own - its great fun and the taste is hard to beat.

Oh, and if you decide this isnt for you, thats ok, I wont be offended.

how about this one, http://www.sunbeam.com.au/products/product_details.cfm?rec_id=587&sec_id=79&home_id=2 is that good enough?

I live in Riverwood by the way, so its kinda close to ya.

A number of people do have that grinder with the EM6910. As you read through threads you will see they do work with the 6910 but reliability has been an issue. But seem to be supported by waranttee so you will have to consider the suitability for you. Would be a good starting point though. The next step up from that would be around 300 dollars for an Iberital or Gaggia MDF. People seem to get the EM0480 for less than the price advertised.

golden86, if you ask any "snob" here about the importance of a grinder you would be bombarded with reasons to get the best one that you can...

Without a great grind, you will not get a great coffee.

I would strongly suggest you aim for a grinder that can stick around with you on your coffee journey.

Oh really, I wouldve never thought the grinder plays such a huge role in the process.

Now I cant wait for my pay day so i can get all these gear
