Sorry to dig up this old thread, but it has come my turn to perform said maintenence on my beloved Silvia. Could someone who has done this before quote the part number for the o-rings? The schematic has me stumped. 700352 maybe...?

Also, Ive noticed that when let the machine warm up till it reaches steady state(about half an hour), the valve becomes stiff to open. Has anyone else had this symptom?
    Hi Jacko,

Site sponsors DiBartoli and Coffeeparts will both be able to assist with the required bits and postage to you...

    Good luck

    Ah yes - the dreaded 700308 :

My steam wand seemed to dribble every which way, so everything rubber was deemed to be suspect (3 o-rings and the gasket). These were indeed replaced, with a certain amount of drama and rather more brute force than I mightve liked! I think my Silvia has been rather neglected in its previous life -- certainly the wand has been leaking a looong time. I had a vague plan of putting some pix up -- not sure how useful this would be to anyone else in my position, but the pile of tools at the end was impressive!

Anyway, it all seems tove been successful - no more leaks Tho Im still coming to terms with my new "soft-feel" steam tap -- it doesnt need to be turned **OFF** like it used to, and even seems more enthusiastic when its on!

With the coffeparts website, I think Silvia owners are probably better off starting at http://www.coffeeparts.com/machines/rancilio.html which lists the basic Silvia parts kit (as it were). The drawing on http://www.coffeeparts.com/rancilio/ran2.html doesnt quite match whats in the Silvia, and was the cause of a great deal of head-scratching when I belatedly discovered it (just as well it was belated, otherwise Id probably still be trying to figure out what I should order : )

Thata exactly what I was wondering (about in very high temps). I agree their website is quite vague isnt it.

By the way, did you end up stopping your leak? I dont know if your valves are the same as mine, but I replaced with bits from here: http://www.coffeeparts.com/rancilio/ran2.html. I imagine 700308 would be your problem? I replaced this in my valve, but it still leaked. It turned out there was an inperfection in the brass where the gasket sits. A little sanding fixed that.

    Hi Damian,

Thats interesting. I was about to hang it on our local Bunnings for being useless (it *was* the first place we tried), but in fact we did ask explicitly for silicone, and "doustgrease" is pretty coy about actual composition. Just says "non-petroleum".

No MSDS on their website either. Wonder what it does in *hot* water?

I just saw this topic. Bunnings near me sells a product called doustgrease. It says it is foodsafe. It is a small tube. I havent tried it though as I already have some silicon grease.

    Hi Dennis,

Thanks for that. I did finally manage to find a purveyor of silicone grease on this side of town (Blackwoods in Scoresby, if anyone needs to know )

Im surprised you didnt get a response from Coffee Parts - best bet would be to give them a call and speak to Pedro as he will "walk you through" the process.
Pretty sure that Pedro and Cilinia will be flat out preping for the AromaFest and may not be near their offices....

As youve discovered, food grade grease isnt always easy to come by. I use it for lubricating my roaster but it comes from the US in a grease gun tube size that might be overkill for your Rancillio.

You could try a commercial kitchen supplier or give the following people (Fuchs) a call and ask for the nearest stockist of their "Geralyn food grade grease".

If youre still stuck after all that, let me know.

By way of a follow up on the silicone grease -- just in case anyone else is inspired to try some, well, round our neck of the woods this is still specialist equipment. Bunnings: nup; Reeces: never heard of it; the bearing place next door: how about a 250g tub of something that might be the right stuff... :-/

Basically, this is industrial lube suppliers territory. Not that theyre not perfectly happy to sell you a little tube -- just slightly bemused :-?

Well I ordered what I hoped were all the right bits from coffeeparts, but *then* I found another Rancilio page on the coffeeparts site with an incredibly confusing exploded diagram of the steam valve/wand etc. So I PM the coffeeparts guy to try to check that Ive ordered the right bits -- no reply. Try email -- no reply. The parts arrive, but the "washer" that I hoped Id ordered is actually a little black rubber gasket thing about 2mm thick.

Can anyone tell me whether this is the right bit??? I dont want to find out it isnt after Ive got everything in pieces

The needed parts should all be available from Coffee Parts and I would expect the food grade silicone grease to be readily available in the plumbing section at your local hardware store. It is used when rebuilding washerless faucets and comes in a very small pill box size/type container which will probably last you the rest of your life.

Hi Java, thanks for the tip. Presumably good ol Oz hardware stores will also stock this stuff

Servicing/rebuilding a steam valve is something that is easily done yourself. It will take approximately 15-30 minutes depending on your skill with tools. The only parts required are a washer and some o-rings which will cost you perhaps $5-10.

The coffeeco guide shows you how to do everything needed for a steam valve rebuild with one exception. I would clean out the inside of the large brass piece and then prior to putting the valve stem back in put a light coating of some food grade silicon grease (cheaply and readily available in most hardware stores in the plumbing section) on the o-rings. This will extend their life and help prevent any leakage around them.

As always the usual caveats of making sure the machine is unplugged and cooled down before being worked on apply.

Er -- nearly all machines need servicing, or nearly all CS sponsors service machines?

The word from Chris was "pricey". Ouch.

Plan A (get necessary bits from coffeeparts and just fix the leak) may have to be resurrected. The coffeeco info & pix will be invaluable there -- thanks vicroamer.

But can anyone give me a hint -- whats actually involved in a "service"? (as opposed to a repair). Is it something I can do myself?
