  • New... Confused... Please help!

    Hi to All,

Keen to upgrade from my (cheap & nasty ) Sunbeam to something that will produce a predictably great brew.  Will also purchase a mid-range grinder to go with it.

Started off really excited about doing the research to find the perfect machine for me, but the more I read the more confused and daunted[smiley=undecided.gif] I become by all the moving parts that make up a quality machine & grinder.

Seriously considering the Vibiemme Domobar Levetta, with the Compak K3 (special August offer through Chris at Talk Coffee - thanks for your advice Chris!)

Would love to hear if anyone has any better options in this price range to consider, or is there a good chance that I wont be disappointed?

    Cheers,
    Slowcoffee.

PS. Absolutely in awe of the wealth of coffee knowledge of CS members!

    Welcome to CS slowcoffee,

The equipment youre considering is a great set of kit, and you certainly cant go wrong by dealing with Chris. Perhaps one of the reasons you may be feeling confused is because Chris is in the habit of telling it like it is, and allows you to make the decision!

If you havent already read it, theres a great review below of the K3, and though its a side-by-side comparison with a Mazzer Mini, you can just read the bits about the K3 if thats the grinder that really takes your fancy.

    Cheers!

        Hi Slowcoffee,

Cant speak about the K3, but if its as good or better than the Mazzer Mini, which I use in the cafe, itll do just fine.

The VBM Levetta will not disappoint you!! I bought mine October last year and use it frequently...two or three times most days. It is what I would call a fairly forgiving machine, and easy to pour good sweet shots, and it has heaps of steaming power. Built like a tank to boot.

I can obtain a better shot with the Levetta than our cafe commercial machine... Expobar Elegance 2 group.

Id suggest having a demo with the Levetta before you consider much further.

          Thanks Trevorbeans,

Youve told me exactly what I wanted to hear - Im happy/keen to work on technique to pour a great shot, but the fact that its fairly forgiving is quite a relief!

I dont live in Melbourne (or Sydney) so will be purchasing the machine and grinder without actually seeing it first. Its seems like the right choice though for what Im after!

Are there any extras youd recommend purchasing with the machine? Tamper? - Love the look of the Pullman Tampers! :Tamper Mat? Cleaning products?

          Cheers,

            Hi Slowcoffee,

We add CoffeeSnobs fresh beans, backwash detergent and training notes to all of our machines.

You should probably also consider a jug, knock tube, tamper and tamping mat...

            Regards

            Chris

              Hi Chris,

Thanks for that.  My old Sunbeam almost had me in tears   today and your mobile number was dialled in to place the order for immediate dispatch!  Will most probably chat with you tomorrow (after further selling the idea to "he whos happy to drink instant" )

Greatly appreciate your balanced advice and thoughts!

              Cheers,

                Re: New... Confused... Please help!

                Hi Slowcoffee,

Sorry Ive not replied promptly, but Im away from my home tonight and picked up your post on my daughters computer.

Chris has said it all really...Id just say that my Pullman tamper works very well with
the Levetta. The grooved indicators give an excellent idea of how level your tamp is,and are a good depth reference. While Im thinking of that, it pays not to underdose the basket, or youll not get a rich shot. I personally also cut the shot a lttle short to avoid getting the watery stuff in the cup.

Incidentally, it was Chris who influenced me in a positive way towards the Levetta,
rather than cheaper machines, and for that Im very grateful.

                All the best

                Trevorbeans

I bought my setup sight unseen from Chris.
Was happy from the very first shot and still am.

                      Re: New... Confused... Please help!

                      Hi slowcoffee,

I also used to have an old Sunbeam Cafe series, and now have the Levetta and havent looked back. The differences in the taste of the coffee are like cheese and chalk, and that is still using my old Sunbeam 480 grinder. I also should have a chat to Chris and talk about upgading that one day.

As the Levetta is single boiler, it takes a minute or so to purge the steam wand and get the boiler up to pressure for steaming. I dont find it an issue as I usually drink blacks, but when I do need to steam milk, I use that spare minute to rinse the basket, grouphead etc anyhow. It makes alot of steam and textures milk very easily. A great machine.

                      Cheers

I am also considering the Vibiemme Domobar Levetta, with the Compak K3.

I seen some really positive comments on the CS site from happy owners but I am puzzled as to why there are hardly any reviews on the internet in general for this machine. Any ideas why?
Try searching for reviews on the Silvia and there are stacks of them.

Does anyone have any links to sites where the Levetta is reviewed?

As asked by Slowcoffee, are there other machines that should be considered in the $800 - 1300 bracket as a step above the Silvia? Cheap HX machines like the Oscar?

                            Cheers

                              Hi there slowcoffee,

A very nice choice if I must say so. Youll be wrapped when it arrives. Try not to pee yourself!

I was a little intimidated by the Levetta when I first got it with all the metal and the lever. I have since found it to be very forgiving and a pleasure to use.

And have no fear buying from Chris interstate. Even though Im Melbourne based, I occasionally call Chris to ask questions even months after I bought mine and hes always friendly and happy to talk. Youve made a good decision there.

As for tampers, I use an Espro with my Levetta and find its great for eliminating that one variable of tamp pressure. Its not a perfect fit in the basket, but its nice enough. My shots are more consistent and I can play around with grind and dose and not worry about tamp pressure. Tampers are a personal thing I reckon, but I like the Espro.

I, like Trev, cut the shots before blonding for a richer and sweeter shot. Once youve tried it, theres no turning back. Youll be happy with 40ish ml shots of luscious black gold than the "standard" 60mls double espresso.

                              Happy Brewing.

                              Javabeen.
