  • Correct Single Shot

    Hey,

First off, Im not sure if this is the right place to post this? I tried to look for another catagorie but couldnt find any that seemed to match..

I was taught a while ago, that the best coffee comes at the beginning of the extraction....So, if you dont want to use the Single filter cup, then the best way to get a single shot (30mls) was to use the double basket, put the cup under BOTH spouts, and only run the shot for 12 - 14 seconds......

Does this make sense? Because I had being doing it that way when I had my Sunbeam, but now with the Silvia (still cant believe I actually own one) I have started to run the shot for 25 - 30 secs and only catch one side...it seems weaker somehow....

    Thanks
    Ed

Yes, the "correct single shot" is going to be weaker. You were pouring double ristrettos on your sunbeam. Why not do the same with the Silvia? It seems a shame a waste a whole single shot.

    cheers,

the silvia comes standard with a 6gr single and a 12 gr doubkle filter
recomend getting a7gr single, it gives a better shot and less fiddly

Use the double basket and pull ristretto shots, its hard to get consistent shots with a single basket.

Hmmm I see...so whats the difference between a ristretto shot and a regular shot? Im a very particular about doing things right :P I just see that alot of people use the doubles and only catch one side....Why wouldnt everyone that uses a double basket jst pour a ristretto for a single shot?

          Thanks alot

            Re: Correct Single Shot

A ristretto is a "restricted" shot. Its the first half (normally) of a single shot. Extracting a double ristretto (~30ml) from a double basket will give you a more intense, sweeter (less bitter) shot than using a 30ml from one side.
I dont know why some people burn one side of the shot down the drain...maybe the ristretto is too intense for them?

ahhh ok...but......for a ristretto, would I still run the shot for 25 seconds or so?? but grind to make only 30ml come from both spouts?....sorry bit confused...

becuase the way ive been doing it is running the shot for only 12 - 15 seconds..

I did enjoy the intensity of the shots i had from the sunbeam..

              Thanks

Now you are getting into controversial areas. ;D

Some say a ristretto should be ground finer and then run shorter, others that just shorter makes it a ristretto. Either way, 15-20 seconds is a usual ristretto pour and remember:

I did enjoy the intensity of the shots i had from the sunbeam..

                Thanks

its the enjoyment that counts. Try both ways and see which you prefer.

good point....it really does seem a shame to run half off then pour perfectly good coffee down the sink... :-?

Ill have to keep working on my wife to drink coffee ;D

                  Thanks

Save the other half for an iced coffee later.
