Wait til you start texturing milk gm..... Using the Controller to manage the Boiler in "Steam" mode makes producing the best, silky micro-foam, literally a walk in the park, 8-)

          Ill second that Mal.
Silvia has been a different Gal since I installed Jims PID with steam control.
Just makes it all so easy. Great consistent shots. I really can taste the difference.
Way to go greenman, youre going to love it.
Put one on your list Shimmy.

          Cheers,
          Alan

              Re: Miss Silvia...Temp surfing

I went for the dual control for brew and steam, only been running a day so far but my shots have been consistent and good, steam power is amazing, the microfoam this morning was so smooth and silky as Mal suggested it would be!!
With Jims instruction CD it was so easy to instal and looks as though it should be part of the machine and not just an add-on, well worth the outlay in my books.

Although it is in Fahrenheit units, this graph should give you a good idea of what is going on behind the scenes when you are surfing. On this particular machine (there will be some variation), the light goes off when the boiler temperature is at 228F (109C). After that, the temperature continues to increase for around 45 seconds, reaching 250F (121C) before slowly starting to cool.

Also note that the group temperature is on a cycle too, but lags the boiler temperature by 7 or 8 minutes.

While testing this machine, I got the best shot temperatures at 45 seconds or more after "light off." Shots pulled too much earlier than this ran a little cool on my test machine.

Im puzzled by this -- wouldnt pulling the shot at 45 secs after light-OFF be right at the peak boiler temp, and so be way too hot?

Because the group temperature stays cooler on a non-PID machine with a 100C thermostat.

The group temp at 45 seconds is around 85C on the graph.  For comparison, on a fully warmed up PIDd machine, the group temp runs closer to 90C.

To make up for the slightly cooler group on a stock machine, I believe it needs to have a higher boiler temperature at the time the shot is pulled.

I am also puzzled by this, I have found on my machine(100c thermostat) around 90 seconds(after light off) give or take 10 seconds depending on bean is about right.

                      Re: Miss Silvia...Temp surfing

I have Jims SD3C with steam control PID and I can thoroughly recommend it.
As for price, have a look at Jims PID Kits listing under Site Sponsors.
Final price you pay will depend on the exchange rate at the time of purchase, as Jim is based in the US.

90 secs! Wow! I can only assume mine has the 110*C thermostat, because I have to wait in excess of 2 minutes!

Ive never even worked out how much in excess of 2 minutes, since by 3 mins Im bored with waiting...
