I am also puzzled by this, I have found on my machine(100c thermostat) around 90 seconds(after light off) give or take 10 seconds depending on bean is about right.
90 secs! Wow! I can only assume mine has the 110*C thermostat, because I have to wait in excess of 2 minutes!

Ive never even worked out how much in excess of 2 minutes, since by 3 mins Im bored with waiting...

I have Jims SD3C with steam control PID and I can thoroughly recommend it.
As for price, have a look at Jims PID Kits listing under Site Sponsors.
Final price you pay will depend on the exchange rate at the time of purchase, as Jim is based in the US.

Im puzzled by this -- wouldnt pulling the shot at 45 secs after light-OFF be right at the peak boiler temp, and so be way too hot?
Because the group temperature stays cooler on a non-PID machine with a 100C thermostat.

The group temp at 45 seconds is around 85C on the graph.  For comparison, on a fully warmed up PIDd machine, the group temp runs closer to 90C.

To make up for the slightly cooler group on a stock machine, I believe it needs to have a higher boiler temperature at the time the shot is pulled.

Although it is in Fahrenheit units, this graph should give you a good idea of what is going on behind the scenes when you are surfing. On this particular machine (there will be some variation), the light goes off when the boiler temperature is at 228F (109C). After that, the temperature continues to increase for around 45 seconds, reaching 250F (121C) before slowly starting to cool.

Also note that the group temperature is on a cycle too, but lags the boiler temperature by 7 or 8 minutes.

While testing this machine, I got the best shot temperatures at 45 seconds or more after "light off." Shots pulled too much earlier than this ran a little cool on my test machine.

Im puzzled by this -- wouldnt pulling the shot at 45 secs after light-OFF be right at the peak boiler temp, and so be way too hot?

I went for the dual control for brew and steam, only been running a day so far but my shots have been consistent and good, steam power is amazing, the microfoam this morning was so smooth and silky as Mal suggested it would be!!
With Jims instruction CD it was so easy to instal and looks as though it should be part of the machine and not just an add-on, well worth the outlay in my books.

    Ill second that Mal.
Silvia has been a different Gal since I installed Jims PID with steam control.
Just makes it all so easy. Great consistent shots. I really can taste the difference.
Way to go greenman, youre going to love it.
Put one on your list Shimmy.

    Cheers,
    Alan

Installed my PID from Jim yesterday, shots I have pulled today have been great, very consistent.............things are looking good!!!
Wait til you start texturing milk gm..... Using the Controller to manage the Boiler in "Steam" mode makes producing the best, silky micro-foam, literally a walk in the park, 8-)

    Hi Ed,

We have a Silvia with PID attached for demo - if you live in the Sydney area you can drop in and have a look. It will be in the showroom as of tomorrow morning at around 10am (I have been playing with it at home :-))

    Regards
    Deb

If you are considering PID, Jims kits are fantastic. The workmanship is of very high quality and the instructions make it easy for anyone comfortable with basic hand tools to install.

    As I have said before:
-Just using Silvia is like standing on the tracks, blindfold in place, waiting for the train.

-Time surfing (light on, wait 45 seconds, pull shot) is like standing on the tracks, running a stopwatch, and stepping off the tracks to see if the train is there, and hoping you got the timing correct.

-Temp surfing with based on the display from a digital thermometer is like trying to jump on a
train as it ran through the station at speed.

-PID is a leisurely boarding onto a stopped train with champagne served at the door by a very gracious porter..

On the other hand, my stock VBM Domobar Super with Erics thermometer adapter beats the puss out of my PIDd Silvia, and well it should for around three times the cost.

    Hi Shimmy

The PID controls the temp - and very very well at that. Look up PID on Wikipedia and posts here and also lots of info on Jims PID Kits site.
As for cost - see the sponsor on the left "PID Kits".

When I had a Silvia I installed one of Jims PID kits onto it. Its an excellent kit and it saved me much trouble sourcing all the parts locally. One can get PID units from electronic suppliers here but they will cost just as much as getting one from the US and it wont come with all the wires and connectors cut to size and ready to go. Jims kit also comes with a superb manual and how to assemble it into the Silvia.

Its not cheap but if you are going to keep your Silvia for a few years it is well worth it. You wont have to temp surf at all.

    Mike
