... you will observe the existence of a thick tarry substance sticking stubbornly to various recesses of the Group and low-flow sections of the shower-screen. All this "tar" is congealed, rancid coffee oils built up in successive layers over time. Plain water back-flushing does NOT get rid of this stuff and its existence will cause detrimental contamination of the water into every espresso shot that you pull.
Mal.
Scary, but good to know.
OK, assuming that this tarry substance is observed. How do you remove it? Successive detergent backflushes or just a good scrub with a group head brush and detergent solution?

whats the best way to remove the shower screen?
cheers,
sd
Hi sd,
Lever the whole lot down with a flat blade screwdriver against the side of the shower screen using the edge of the group as a pivot point. Keep a spare or two on hand
I havent tried it myself but I have had mine removed. The instrument used was a small Philips head screwdriver. There are two recesses around the group head shower screen that can be used to carefully and gently lever the shower screen + rubber gasket off. Its the gasket that holds the shower screen on.
Theres a destructive method here (for when you intend to replace the seal) and there is also a thread here
I dont think that means a flat head wouldnt be better. You would need something to get a bit of grip on the side of the shower screen. The Philips head left a very small indent.

Its very difficult stuff to remove flynnaus and you will need to scrub it off and even the use of a Dentists Probe tool might come in handy to get it out of tight corners. When you dislodge some, put a small amount in your mouth and taste it, and also smell it. Once youve done that youll never, ever want to give it a chance to build up again... It is truly foul
Good to my word, I am developing the first CoffeeSnobs VBM Levetta User Guide. Something definitely needed in view of the lack of a good user amnaul provided by Vibiemme. Will post the first draft here for critique
