  • Advice if you will.

    Hello my fellow Australians....
Im sure youve all been asked this before, so once more wont hurt. I wish to purchase an espresso machine and would like some direction.
    Some points to consider:

    * It will be making 4-6 cups per day
    * It needs to froth milk
    * It cant taste like it came from an auto(apologies to those auto owners)
    * The Minister for Law & Finance says it cant break the bank! ($1k limit for machine and grinder)

Also i would like to try before I buy, now I am in Perth & Im not sure where I could sample a brew? I get my fix from Cimbalino in Dalkeith when Im working in that area and would love for it to taste like theirs. ( of course id buy their beans )
Ive done a little homework on some machines, does it really matter whether its brass or not? 15 bar or 17? I did see some post earlier about combo units such as the Breville BES860 and another combo but it had brass components (cant remember name) does it matter about the built in grinder? How good/bad could they be? It sounds like the Silvia-Rocky partnership is the go, but is a little too steep although the Silvia looks a sounds like a  great buy, but the grinder seems a little rich!
Dont forget I live in W.A. (Wait Awhile) and im not sure where to go as Ive just started looking-Im a very green bean!
Any advice would be muchly appreciated.
    Yay... my first post.
Yes we are backwards...But were backwards compatable!

    welcome sm,

not sure on perth, but some of the members can help you there. 4-6 cups a day will be fine on a silvia unless you regularly do them all at once. second hand models come up for between 5-600 and would be a good option. spend as much as you can on the grinder. compak k3 is a very good grinder for another 5-600.

      Thanks sd.
But I need the total price to be under$1000 inclusive of the grinder.
      4-6 cups a day but 2 at a time.

          Re: Advice if you will.

          Thanks KK.

Not really into buying second hand no offence to those who do. I could manage a Silvia budget wise and look at a cheaper grinder to keep it under $1k but have read in some threads around here that would be a BIG no no! Also just looked at the nemox dell opera- looks good, fits the budget would love to hear from others who have it.
One thing concerns me is why the nemox is around the same price as the BES860 considering Breville is an appliance manufacturer not just specialising in espresso? :-?

              Hiya, Mac,

at the risk of being severly beaten about the head for saying so, I can heartily recommend the Sunbeam 6910and 480/450 combination for under $1000.

As a matter of fact, you could do as I have done and purchase a second EM 480 and STILL be under $1000. That way I get to choose between 2 different single origins, depending on my mood.

Im in Morley, so, if youd like to see, taste and test the EM6910 in action, Id be only too happy to oblige. Just PM me.

                Re: Advice if you will.

Does anyone know where I might be able to view a nemox dell opera?
Or am I wasting my time? I just googled the product and found a thread posted here quite a while ago saying it had given them trouble. I guess thats gonna happen with so many people using so many different products and writing so many reviews.... Im so many confused! :-/

Have they sorted out the problems with the nemox? (tamper too small etc)

Most of us use a separate tamper for best results

                    Hey there,
In the same boat as you

From what Ive researched, you might almost be better off buying the Silvia/Rocky new (yes I know well over $1K - prob 1.2?) but at least when you get bored/upgraditis/need come cash, the resale value will well be worth it.

In my head - buy new for $1.2-1.3K, resell in two years for about $600-800?

I like to work on a cost per year basis but yes im on a budget too.

                      Hey there tash,

Thanx for the input, from doing more research of my own I think the Silvia/Rocky combo looks to be a goer. Ive had a look thru some of the sponsors and Im sure I can pick up a combo for around$1.1-2k. Although Id have to factor in delivery cost. Ive actually found a shop in Perth that sell the combo but sheesh! $$$ Ill see if I can use my Bali bartering experience

                        Re: Advice if you will.

Supreme coffee machines in perth have the nemox with the lux grinder built in. Worth looking there. The other option is a silvia for 7-800 and a nemox grinder for 300. That I would think would be the best on your budget.

                        http://www.coffeeco.com.au/articles/comparison.html

That article has a comparison between silvia and the lelit combi. The lelit combi as far as I know is the same machine as the nemox. If you went that road you would have some money to spend on accesories etc which would be good and perhaps even a barista course!!!!!

Oh, when using that Bali bartering see if theyll throw in an hours lesson - I imagine theres a pretty steep learning curve when going from department store machines to a serious one like this...

All the best and keep me posted on your final price so I know what to expect - Ive been looking at about $1200 for the 2008 and $1300 for the 2009 Silvia+Rocky.

An hours lesson sounds good....Ill throw that at them just before they wrap it up
$100 diff for a few cosmetic changes for the 09 is a bit rough hey? I think someone had said they added a logo on the group handle...yippee!

For $1200 I cant really see myself getting bored tashie ;D
