    Trentski, I think you misunderstand.
    Nope, no misunderstanding here 8-)

Nobody is tapping the portafilter during the tamping process.
    Nobody? are you sure

Its just a settling the coffee grounds, perhaps up dosing?
There is discussion around the webs that tapping during settling has no effect, a negative effect, a positive effect, depending on who you listen to.

So the question, which should be for another thread, remains. What are you hoping to gain by tapping during dosing and is it making a positive contribution in the cup or are you doing it because youve seen others doing it?

I really dont understand what you are trying to convey.
To what type of tapping are YOU referring?

      tapping during settling
Tapping during settling? OR tapping TO settle,
theres a bit of a difference.
I dont know a method of settling which does not involve tapping the portafilter.

dose to full, tap pf, dose to over full, tap pf, tamp light
          I dont understand terntski comments

I assume you talking about settling/collapsing which merely allows more coffee in the PF and allows for volume dosing using a sweeping technique

This the technique Scottie Callaghan discribes
          1. Grinder on
          2. Pull group handle out of group head
          3. Knock coffee out in knock box
          4. Clean/wipe out filter basket
          5. Grinder off
          6. Put group handle on grinder forks
          7. Pull dosing chamber lever 4 times
          8. Collapse on grinder forks twice
          9. Pull dosing chamber lever another four times
          10. Collapse on grinder forks twice
          11. Pull dosing chamber lever four times
          12. Collapse on top of grinder (given you are working on a grinder that has a metal casing for the dosing chamber) four times
          13. Sweep

Yes, i think there is confusion because i am using a doserless grinder.. The coffee doesnt have a chance to settle/compact before it is dosed into the group... i think...

Anywho i am getting heaps better results now, and no wet pucks!

              stay calm ;D

Tapping after tamping is said to fracture the puck or dislodge it from the side of the basket, tapping during dosing as a settling technique may not be without its downside as well.

You want to be consistent with your technique, its pretty hard to "tap" consistently so why not take it out of your process? What do you think it is adding to the taste in the cup? could it be detracting from the taste in the cup?

Are you simply tapping because Scottie Callaghan does it?

I grind, rotating the group handle as the basket fills, level off to a small mound (similar to stockfleth manoeuvre) and use a light tamp. Naked handle shows an even extraction with no channelling and its very repeatable.
