  • Silvia temp surfing

    Hello,

Just had a though that I would like to run past on here. When pulling a shot, since I dont have a PID, would it be possible to turn on the steaming whilst pulling the shot? This will turn on the boiler.

Will there be any damage done to the Silvia?

    Cheers

    Re: Silvia temp surfing

This is actually what I do after a mate showed me on his Silvia. I dont do it so much to force the boiler to come on, but more so the steam is ready to go by the time I have finished pulling the shot.

I have been doing it for years without any problems with the machine. But I would be interested in hearing if anybody advises against it.

I activate my steam switch about 10 - 15 seconds before finishing a shot, but only to get a bit of a head start with the steam temp.

From a physics point of view it must affect your shot of coffee, however so will the temp of the incoming fresh water, the starting temp of the boiler, the flow rate, the position of the moon , etc, etc, etc  Thus good or bad only experience will tell.

I am still a noob with the Silvia, but I would suggest that if the boiler is full of water, and being fed with fresh water (making a shot) then turning on the steam switch would not be an issue.

I think it would depend on how long it is on.
A 30 second shot is only just enough time for the heating element in the boiler to really start to kick in temperature wise.
It takes quite a while for it to raise the temp to actual steaming temperature.

The slow speed of the water being fed through the system during pulling a shot gives the large mass of brass in the Silvias group assembly a chance to stabilise the water temp by the time it reaches the puck.

Of course without doing extensive tests with thermocouples installed all over the machine its a bit hard to guess how much anything affects anything else.

The only true indicator is if the coffee in your cup at the end of the shot is any good then all is good in the universe  ;D

            Re: Silvia temp surfing

Cool, will give it a try for future cups.

Cause it seems when pulling a shot that the temperature varies quite a bit from start to finish.

My assumption is that the steam switch only turns on the boiler. Also the steam switch does not activate the water pump from my understanding.
Once again, just a thought for an alternative to the PID kit until I can actually afford one

From somebody you would expect to have done exactly that...

                  Cheers for that

Looks like Ill avoid the steam switch, however will give it a try for curiosity sake hehe.
