  • EM 6910 - brass showing in portafilter, dripping water nozzle.

Issue 1: Brass showing on inside of Portafilter

Ive just noticed that the inside of the portafilter on my Sunbeam 6910 is losing its chrome - the brass is showing. I have been cleaning it with Citric acid - but have only done this about 4 times. Does it matter if the chrome comes off? Will it affect the taste? (NB - I removed the plastic thingy when I first got it - I believe someone here christened it the "Graeme".)

    Issue 2: Dripping water nozzle

The hot water nozzle has begun to drip when the machine is doing a pour. Anybody else had this problem? Does it get worse? I am asking because I want to know if it is worth worrying about, as it is not causing a problem otherwise.

The unit was purchased in January.

A: Pealing off in sheets or just fading ???

Many commercial units (hard core home ) that have been in use for some time have teh chrome worn away...

B: Dripping water nozzle = possible lack of maintenance and correct cleaning agents etc OR lots of very fine coffee... Or some scale has come away..

It gets in a little valve and allows water to flow in 2 directions rather than one...

What happens if you turn on Hot Water and leave teh group out... After a while, do you get drips from teh group head ?

Conclusions... Do a De Scale as per teh manual and then do a back flush as per the manual... Using correct cleaning reagents..

Then test and let us know..

Re: EM 6910 - brass showing in group handle, dripping water nozzle.

      Issue 1:
Well, its a relatively new machine, so I was a bit surprised. Its wear rather than anything else - its not coming off in sheets.

If it doesnt affect the coffee, and is just cosmetic, then I dont care (particularly since it is inside the portafilter!). Thats what I was concerned about - whether having the exposed brass would do something to the flavour (or be dangerous - I dont really know much about the chemical effects of these metals).

      Issue 2:
Thanks for that - it sounds like a highly plausible explanation. Ill try it out. It is due for a descale. They say every six months, so it is really one month overdue.

1: Not 100% normal but to be expected... Some are better than others..

2: Let us know as to Group and getting drip in H Water and when you run Hot Water, what happens on teh Group ?

          Brass wont kill you
Most household taps are made of it + water runs inside copper pipes

          Relax & drink the coffee

The group doesnt drip - I ran it for a minute, and filled two latte glasses to the brim.

So it still leaks a bit from the HW when making a coffee ?

If so, there is a small valve in the main group head that can have a slight impact but usually for when water comes out the Head, when running HW.

As the knob opens and closes a valve, the only other thing I can quickly think of it that a bit of scale or crap has made its way into HW valve...

Unless you very happy with pulling apart... I would not go there.. So where are you located ?

If only a drip... Wait until ya next clean and descale and run the HW so that the cleaning agent etc gets to make it way via the HW valve / tap..

Let us know how you go..

PS. Dropped two groups in to be re chromed (1 = heavy use) and cost me $40... So @ $20 a group = OK cost to have them like new again.

The second one was a Naked EM6910 group, that I modified to take out the step in teh lug... So it should come back as new and all teh machining marks from being Naked will also be done...
