  • Very happy with Sunbeam EM6910 / EM0480 Combo!

I have been researching my purchase for the past few weeks on these pages and was convinced that the Silvia / Rocky combo was the way to go, so many glowing reviews.

I noticed that Grinders were running the 08 model out at 699 but you have to order them, its a bit of a pain...so i thought, no worries I am sure Jetblack will price match , especially if I am buying a grinder, tamper, thermometer coffee AND I do their barista course....well to my amazement they wouldnt price match ! So I turned the car around (by the time I called them I was half way across the harbor bridge, cash in pocket) and spent the rest of Sunday sulking!

In the meantime I came across a post by Rusty who said that the EM6910 was in his opinion (and this site is all about opinions only) was a better choice than the Silvia. So I contacted him and after a few emails decided that Id try the Sunbeam combo - I live just near a Sunbeam outlet so the machine and the grinder was $700 all up, so quite a saving.

I have to say that I am VERY VERY impressed at the shots I am getting. A Zillion times better than any of the cafes around here and this is with beans from Tobys Estate that are stamped July 29, so wait til i get some fresh babies ! I ordered some Brown Buys last night

I have been fully warned that this machine wont last as long as the Silvia, but its got a very solid feel about it.

the grinder is a little on the plastic side, and makes a hell of a mess, but the grind is very good.

As a footnote to the story, Jetblack got back to me the next day and said that they would do a price match after all, but by then id already made my mind up on the Sunbeam.

Thanks Rusty for you help - here is a vote for the Sunbeam combo....and I will do the FREE barista course!

    Good on ya tony!,
Remember not all 6910s go belly up, i would say the majority that have here, are the result of a small percentage breaking and the owners searching the net and finding coffeesnobs.com.au! Your right, it wont last as long as a silvia and rocky but your having fun now, and now is what its all about!
What browns did you get from Andy? please say the Espresso WOW.....they are all great but the WOW is.....well......WOW!
enjoy your new machine and stay in touch on teh forum, great bunch here, with a wealth of knowledge on teh 6910 and in general, great conversationalists! ;D

I just bought a variety pack to try out a few different beans and hopefully stumble of something I like. I drink lattes so would that suit the Espresso wow bean as well?

the only shame is that I really have to limit myself to 3 coffees a day....doctors orders (he said 2 actually!) Therefore each one has to be savored!

      cheers

      Tony

Yeah tony the WOW goes amazingly in milk!, doctors orders hey.....was it caffeine or milk that was the problem, remember if you pour double ristrettos instead of your normal shot it contains far less caffeine!

The caffeine is the problem....so you are suggesting 2 small shots? Not sure I follow your logic !

Hi Tony, i am too a sunbeam owner and love it too bits, just keep the cleaning up and you shouldnt have any problems.

Now onto the ristrettos, it means u take the double basket fill it and then only run and single shot through it, u get the flavour of a double and the caffine of a single

Keep with the good beans, you will never be dissapointed

Ok...well i always use the double basket and put both into my one cup...is that not the thing to do?

I use the manual pour as well....have not worked out the programs yet...out of the box they dont seem to do much on mine...!

                  Hi Tony,

Stay with the manual pour. Each shot is different and with manual you can stop it as soon as blonding appears.

                  Cheers,

Tony, you are right on track with using the manual, ,many ppl are too lazy to watch the shot so they just use the auto single and double buttons but you are obviously an addict like me and prefer to spend the time extracting true flavor. Keep it up just remember that if you use a smaller cup you can have a stronger coffee but with the same caffine content, my doctor had words in my ear too about number of coffees a day .

Just remember trial and error is where we all started out. We all have to learn and make mistakes, its a fun process though.

                      Well yes, but ...

In my house of distractions and interuptions (Yes, yes, sacrilegious to interrupt the holy pour but try telling the heathens that.), I use the double shot button as a manual button. I stop the pour manually using the same button a second time but worst case I get a decent cup of coffee if something else happens.

Given that I am only ever making a single coffee, should I use i still use the 2 cup filter with the 2 spouts? Or by using the single cup filter will I get a better single shot?

I am doing the Sunbeam course on Saturday, so hopefully that will help me get the most out of the machine, but even now I have to say that this is a superb machine - and $550 ! Talk about value! The double boiler is a real bonus.

Not wishing to be pedantic Tony, but the EM6910 doesnt have boilers - it has independent twin thermoblocks and twin pumps - what Sunbeam calls the TPTT system

                          Cheers,
