Re: Very happy with Sunbeam EM6910 / EM0480 Combo!

My 6910 / 0480 combo is coming up 2 years old soon and (touch wood) still going strong. One weird thing is that the frst group head seal lasted around 14 months, I am now onto my 4th, Im not sure why, Im dosing less coffee into the basket and not turning the handle as far round as I used to, its weird.

In regards to which filter to use, "generally" you will get better shots from the double filter rather than the single, the single is pickier in terms of dosing / distributing / tamping than the double so many users opt to just use the double shot filter.

For spouts, it really doesnt matter, so long as you can direct both spouts into 1 vessel.

I also use the double shot button and press again to stop it if required. I did use the manual button at one stage, until I was distracted and ran a 100ml or so shot (thrown out), so prefer the safety / backup of the preprogrammed buttons.

We dont get offered the Sunbeam course on the other side of the ditch, but from what I have read on here, people seem to get quite a bit out of it.

Look after the machine and hopefully it will serve you well for years to come

Given that I am only ever making a single coffee, should I use i still use the 2 cup filter with the 2 spouts? Or by using the single cup filter will I get a better single shot?
Given that what works for you, works for you--there is no absolute correct answer except via your taste buds.

Im sure the majority here however would say to throw the single basket into a drawer and forget which drawer. Then use the double basket, with a full double dose and extract however much gives you the taste you like best--probably between 20 and 40 ml. This is known as a ristretto and gives all the flavour of the longer shots with much less caffeine and hence bitterness.

Enjoy the course, and the coffee. Let us know how you go.

So should i upgrade the tamper? The one that comes with the Sunbeam is surprisingly good - i was expecting the usual black plastic job.

If you do, then I would be very interested in your experience Tony.

There is such a divergent body of opinion on tamping :-/
To tamp or not to tamp.
Handstand, gentle or somewhere in between.
          Convex or flat.
Aluminium, SS or something altogether different.

Like you, I find the Sunbeam tamper excellent.

Maybe someone will convince me otherwise

I suspect it would be easier to get more consistent results with a steel tamper due to the weight.  I’ve never actually tried using my Sunbeam tamper as I already owned a 58mm Rattleware one when I bought the 6910. I must do the same trial myself.

Re: Very happy with Sunbeam EM6910 / EM0480 Combo!

Ive had my 6910 for over 12 months now and still use the stock tamper with it. While I will admit, my hip pocket twitches each time I see a pullman tamper, the stock tamper is quite good.

I also have a tamper that came with my "Coffees bean" knock box, IMO its a piece of junk. way too much wiggle room and it feels horrible to use.

Like those above, I have had no problems with my 6910 other than non-pour when first bought due to previous owwner having NEVER cleaned it. Regular cleaning, double basket (lets me pour either a milk based drink and an espresso, or what I now know to be a ristretto), its going well and I can see it giving me good service while I save for my upgrade. Saving for a Pullman for the upgrade as well, the stock tamper does the job for me.

Good luck and happy espressing mate.
