Mmmm. I doubt very much if a slightly unlevel bench would cause the problem. The water does not emerge voluntarily from the shower screen and through the puck and then decides which way to go.

It is being forced out at apprx 10 bars of pressure which I imaging would overcome any uneven bench problem.

Remove the shower screen, clean it, and especially inspect the dispersion washer behind it.

While the puck is under 9 bars of pressure if youve ever seen a naked extraction you can see that the espresso is not spraying out of the basket at 9 bars. Rather it is oozing out, in essence at ambient pressure, where it collects on the bottom of the basket until there is enough to drip off into the portafilter. As a result the levelness of the grouphead does in fact influence how the espresso is distributed into the two cups when using a double portafilter.

My silvia does EXACTLY the same thing...!
have done everything to change it.....
still pours more in the left cup...!

                rd,

stupid question, but have you checked the level of the machine? The kitchen bench may not be perfectly level.
Id start by looking at the bench level too

Not all cabinetmakers use a level. Some just put the cabinets on the floor and go with that. Im a cabinetmaker by trade and have come across some whopper out-of-level kitchens in my time - which generally starts with the out-of-level floors of course

                  Re: lopsided Silvia?

Having read this thread from start to finish, Robodoc seems to have found a solution. Still, Ive found the remarks about levels very interesting.

I guess if I felt the need to check levels I would attach the PF and place the level across the bottom of the spouts - then again, that really doesnt tell me whats going on inside the PF.

Im a kinda process of elimination guy. How about swapping the PF to see if the issue still occurs?

Yes, thats one solution. You can also remove the portafilter altogether and see whether water from the shower screen seems to be favouring one side.

                      Re: lopsided Silvia?

I agree with Thundergods comments earlier in this thread - this happens to me if my tamp in uneven. My tendency is to tamp harder on the left side so the right side is higher than the left, and perhaps isnt as compacted on that side. If I leave it unlevel then I get more of the shot from the right side of the PF.

Ive delibaretly tamped harder to the left tot he right to the back... etc etc..to test that, but even then there still seems to be some tendancy to fill the left cup more..?????

Not sure if these have been addressed, but Ive had uneven pours for a number of reasons:
                          * uneven tamp (pullman rings help here)
                          * inside of spouts often have a machine or casting "dag" which can be ground off
                          * Ive even had badly threaded spouts
                          * uneven bench top
                          * dirty diffuser or shower screen

my silvia used to do this really bad. I put an LM spout on and the problem is fixed.

Im sorry I cant help with the uneven pour problem, my Silvia seems to be fairly even in that regard. This does remind me that I bought a single spout from coffee parts the other week, but havent been able to attach it as I havent been able to get the original one off! Ive been trying to unscrew it in the usual fashion (i.e righty tighty, lefty loosy) with no success, and I gave up due to fear of damaging my portafilter. Any clues as to how to get this spout off?

I used vicegrips and a teatowl to prevent damage.
