        Re: sunbeam 6910 & 0480 bargin!

        Hello!

Long time reader first time poster... Just wanted to share my story.

For the last few months have been reading and absorbing the wealth of knowledge from all the members on the forum. Initially I was convinced that the SB 6910 & 0480 combo was right combo for me. After reading hours of information, I was convinced that the 6910 had to many issues and looked for another combo. I moved to the Silvia & Rocky and again didn’t really feel comfortable with purchasing because the “un-forgivingness” of the machine. I then considered the VBM Piccolo and K3 but the price tag and my inexperience just seemed a silly choice for my first machines.

This morning I found my self at square one, I finally bit the bullet and picked up the SB 6910 & 0480 combo for $620 at Harvey Norman (thanks to latte girl for the price point  ), and a bag of Sumatra Dark from Gloria Jeans (yes, yes I know, just wanted beans ASAP).

Opened it up and plugged it all in, ground the beans and pulled my first shot. To say I was a little disappointed would be an understatement. Pulled another shot - same result. Even went for a third, which I should not have bothered with.

Wife suggested watching the DVD. Best thing I could have possibly done. (I highly recommend the DVD to any novices who are initially struggling.)
On my fourth attempt, I changed the grind setting to 10, tampered as per DVD instructions, pressed the button and waited. This time the shot was, well, it was pouring out like on the DVD! It was a rich, consistent flow. I even managed to get a bit of crema.

Couldn’t wipe the smile off my face after that...but still have a long way to go. And looking forward to my espresso journey.

        SMC

            Re: sunbeam 6910 & 0480 bargin!

            Hi SMC welcome!
I know what you are going through , I had a Silvia /Rocky combo & while I cant fault either I didnt have the time or patience to get the best out of silvia so i sold them both & bought a super auto machine(blasfeemer)& hoped the covienience of just pushing a button would compensate. While the coffe was ok (still better than gloria jeans)
I missed the depth of flavour real machines can produce.
So after considering my options I went for the SB em6910 combo & after just 2 dialin shots & some fresh (close) beans from my local Micheals patisery (i like their coffee & the owner is the barista & he,s good) I reckon the em 6910 is capable of great shots & can get there easier than with Silvia (my lack of experience & patience not silvias fault) my shot was just as good if not better than the shot from the comm machine.
I look forward to hearing how you find the machine & there is a lot of helpful snobs here to impart their wisdom.Cant wait for my next shot gotta get a naked portafiller!

            cheers

              Re: sunbeam 6910 & 0480 bargin!

As TG and all CS will say... FRESH BEANS..

By that we mean beans from a supplier that can be trusted / validated..

GJ and many others may be able to sate their beans are fresh... But a fresh USE BY is often no more than 3 - 4 week at most; past the time of roasting. Not packing or arrival to shop..

When ya see best before 2010 etc it means that is should not kill you... Nothing to do with teh quality of teh beans / grounds.

Agree 100% with Anger , If you have to get beens from a gj or as with me micheals, I ask them for the beans from the grinder hopper as they go through so much they tend to be fresh, be weary of specials on pre packaged beans usually means near use by (ie months old) & never buy supermarket beans ( i would rather lick the inside of my grinder ) I once got some beans from gj & they opened the bag & bugs flew out-no joke so I said no thankyou never again.

It can take months to get some beans through the supply chain and into the stores.

Even weekly deliveries are only delivering stale beans.

I (think I) recall reading posts on what had to be done to the SB 6910 to get a better shot out of it... something about cutting away something from the bottom of the basket?? Or am I way off track?

Am I correct in thinking it comes a pressurised basket which should be replaced ASAP?

What modifications make a 6910 better?

Yep use the single floor basket...  Comes with both types..

As to cutting stuff away... Not on the EM6910

Read this topic and focus on part 4..
