  • La Pavoni or Miss Silvia

    Gday folks how goes it?
Am looking for opinions on these two machines....
I know the Miss Silvia is highly recommended in this price range but if I could get a La Pavoni Professional around the same price, which would you recommend?

Also, there is a La Pavoni grinder which looks alright, but would it do the same job as the Rocky or would it be more comparable to the EM0480?

Cheers and enjoy whats left of the weekend,
    Lanx

    As per other requests...

It depends on what you want to do ,,

1: How many in a day / sitting
    2: Milk based or espresso
3: Who else will be using...

Most of the machines the sponsors offer are all worth while... But it does depend on what you actualy want to make Vs looks etc...

      k, primarily I will make about 5 a day....no more than 3 or 4 in a sitting
will mostly be making espresso...with the odd milk based option
and I will be the only using the machine

Re: La Pavoni or Miss Silvia

I started with a gaggia factory which is basically the same as LP professional. I think over all the silvia will produce a better and more consitent result. With the gaggia I found that first coffee was so/so, the second clearly the best and the by the third the machine was usually too hot. There are ways of dealing with this including switching off the machine or using cold water to cool down the group head.
The benefit of the gaggia, which I would assume applies equally to the La Pavoni, is that its a great way to learn about making espresso. Since you create the pressure (with your arm when you pull down the lever) you really get the feel of what is required to get a good extraction. Another advantage is you dont need to steam milk which I understand is one of few limitation on the silvia.

Id love a La Pavoni as a toy. But in all seriousness I think the Silvia wins as an everyday machine.

Silvia with a PID does a pretty decent job. Well with the help of the person on the end of it

Likewise a silvia without pid but with a good temp surfing technique, it just takes a little more time as you cant walk straight up to the machine and pull a shot. To be honest im after a couple of years using the silvia im starting to like the wide thermostat. It allows me some instant adjustability for coffee that are either roasted a fraction light or a fraction dark.
