Re: 2009 steam wand for 2008 Silvia
Whoa! Hasnt this thread gone off-topic?
In case anyone is still looking here for the upgraded V3 (2009) model steam-arm replacement, I thought Id let you know that Ive finally found one.
Its from a company called Chris Coffee in New York. Obviously, they are not a sponsor, so I wont put their URL in. but you can Google them. They are the only company I have found who will post outside the US. I havent found the upgrade kit for sale anywhere in Australia.
Ill let you know when I receive it and how it goes.
BTW, Thanks Di Bartoli for the link to Espresso Parts. Although Espresso Parts (located in Washington, USA) do ship internationally, the articulating steam arm that they stock in not a Rancilio arm, it is a third-party arm that is compatible. Sorry, I really wanted the "real thing"

Thats about it but those small things make a huge diferenceOriginally posted by 69787421212124110 link=1257417982/14#14 date=1258464832just out of curiosity though, apart from the obvious quality of these machines and the ability to steam and brew similtaneously are there any other advantages? such as better heat stability and what not?
Do a search on Sunbeam machines on here and learn how to remove the pressurised baskets from your sunbeam & coupled with fresh roasted coffee you will make a decent cup

Re: 2009 steam wand for 2008 Silvia
they look like beautiful machines, but price is still an issue. im an 18 year old uni student working casually and im barely able to scrap together enough cash for a silvia so i dont think ill be getting a hx anytime soon.
if it werent for the fact that i dont seem to be able to stand average coffees anymore i would stick with my sunbeam.

Yes HX is Heat ExchangerOriginally posted by 33222E7B7B7B7E4B0 link=1257417982/12#12 date=1258464075is hx heat exchanger? i havnt read much about these but i have seen one on the seattle coffee youtube videos. is the giotto rocket one of these, cause if they are theyre pretty expensive.
Yes Giotto is a HX
You pay for quality as these machines with a good maintenance routine will last 20+ years
Thats why I suggested a pre loved machine

You will be better served with a pre loved HX machineOriginally posted by 60717D2828282D180 link=1257417982/9#9 date=1258463598also, to anyone that is still bothering to read my late night ramblings, i was looking to buy a gaggia classic, which ive heard good things about and for $499 on ebay are quite cheap, but after reading about the cheap group handle handle, awkward location of the steam knob, the crappy steam wand and worst of all the corrosion susceptible boiler, ive decided that the silvia would be worth every cent more.
And I am usually on the forum till midnight

oh... i just reread my previous post and it does sound suspiciously like spam. i have no affiliation with coffee-aroma whatsoever just to clear that up.

Re: 2009 steam wand for 2008 Silvia
im located in victoria. why would anyone write a whole paragraph of stuff for an attempt at spam? also, ive been lurking around here for a while and commercial tamper is a pretty common term.
also, i dont mean noob as in someone that would buy supermarket pre-ground coffee, just relative to those that roast their own coffees and know the difference between the taste of an ethiopian and brazilian coffee.
any saving on a silvia would be great. i recently bought a sunbeam coffee machine and a sunbeam grinder and from what ive gathered, the grinder is excellent, especially for $175, but the coffee machine is terrible. it has a pressurized basket and wet steam. ive managed to pull 25 sec/30ml shots but they always seem to taste like theyre lacking in something, i think ive been able to get the best out of the machine and so i am deciding to upgrade.
also, to anyone that is still bothering to read my late night ramblings, i was looking to buy a gaggia classic, which ive heard good things about and for $499 on ebay are quite cheap, but after reading about the cheap portafilter handle, awkward location of the steam knob, the crappy steam wand and worst of all the corrosion susceptible boiler, ive decided that the silvia would be worth every cent more.
finally, i apologise if any of the above doesnt make any sense, its late at night and im only on here rambling at this hour due to my recent obsession with coffee.

Re: 2009 steam wand for 2008 Silvia
Hi WSully,
Thanks for the advice. Yep, buying the whole bit like this would cost a bomb. I rang Coffee Parts last week - they said they were working on a kit to enable fitting the new wand on the old Silvia without the steam manifold, but no ETA.
In the meantime, I found more on this in another thread: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1247718816/26. Apologies to mods - Im not sure how to move my post.
I think I might look overseas and hope that the postage isnt a deal-breaker.
For anyone else checking this out, there is a how-to vid on you-tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NxZlKwmQ1A
